DANVILLE, Va. -- A man on a police ride-along jumped from the vehicle and kicked an opossum that was running along a nearby fence several times, killing the animal, the Danville Police Department said Tuesday.
Police said the man, identified as Evan Bryce Schuler, 22, was riding with a Danville police officer on June 20 when the incident happened while the officer was stopped to refuel.
Police said Schuler had been approved two weeks earlier as part of the department's citizen ride-along program.
Police said Schuler, who said he lived on a farm, claimed that the opossums routinely killed his chickens and that he acted out of instinct.
He has been charged with cruelty to animals. He was arrested Monday and released on a summons for appearance in Danville General District Court.
