Lock Right or Detroit locker

Lock right operates the same as a Detroit, but is NOT as strong, and has more backlash. It'll buck a little more in corners is about all you'll really notice.

I've seen more problems out of lockrights in V6 chunks than the 4cyl, so you may wanna check that.

Best I remember LockRite won't warranty/doesn't recommend anything over 37 inch tires??? LockRite is much easier to install.

Larry Smith on this board has had a lot of problems with Detroit lockers on his Toyota. Also, not too good of support from them either. Might want to get in touch with him.

Locker

I am running a Detroit Locker it the Rear now 529 gears--------been in all summer---------no prolems. just lot of poping---- have a true trac in front --------Looking to change out the true trac
Thanks David

I like my lockrite in the front (D44 though). For your style of driving, go with the lockrite. I have heard bad things about the Detroit as well (in some cases). Lockrite is super easy to install, and would be easy to take out on the trail and toss in some open diff gears if you happened to break it (not that anyone would want to do that on the trail).

DETROIT

The Detroit is strong, but, if you break an axle, especially the short side front of a Toy, it will take the Detroit out. I have broken three of them in that manner, front and rear. It is as cheap or cheaper to buy another Detroit than to fix your broken one. They are warrantied for one year from date of purchase, if "they" decide it is to be replaced. Luckily, I purchased mine from Randy's Ring & Pinion who returned it to them for warranty. ( one unit only) Detriot's customer service is pitifull. I won't buy another one.

Agreed, Detroit is now owned by Eaton I believe and their service has even gotten worse.

Also you dont even have to break a shaft to explode one... just break a u-joint and it will take out the detroit!

what is it that typically breaks when you lose a detroit? i watched 2offroad lose a ujoint, pull the shaft, and drive all day in 3wd(with detroits, IIRC), seems like that would be prime time for a detroit to blow from everything i always hear about them, is it the initial shock?

I have a Detroit in my Nissan and a Lock-Right in my Blazer. On the street and offroad, they handle basically the same. The Lock-Right has more slop in it. Construction-wise, I like the Detroit a lot better since it was designed to be a locker from the ground-up (as opposed to the lock-right depending on a diff case that wasn't).

I think it's one of those things that if you play hard you are bound to break something. I generally take it easy on my stuff so I expect both to last a long time (although those pins on the Lock-Right, well we'll see). Big tires and big stress leads to big breakage.

id take a detroit over a lock rite, i have broke 4 short sides on my toyota, and on the second one my detroit messed up but the problem is it is engaged all the time it will not unlo9ck not a bad problem to have necsicarily.

I've had the same problem with my lock-right, too :)

Spring & pin kit fixed that for me..
