locker install help....

Got finished puttin a detriot locker and new r&p in my rear axle...Pinion bearing was 18inlbs, and pattern on ring was near perfect. Got it all back together, filled it full, but now there seems to be a considerbly more amount of play before the pinon contacts the ring. It will turn between 1/8 and a 1/4 of a turn before it does hits the ring... I know there should be some play, but how much is normal and how much is too far?

What axle are you working on? How much backlash do you have?

10 bolt 30spline chromoly shafts, it was like .013, im baffled by the situation

.013 is a bit loose but its b/c your turning the pinion which is inturn turning the ring gear which is turning the detroit clucthes unitl they catch which then catches the splines on the shafts and then movement stops. its probably normal. thats not backlash your feeling at the pinion.

would it have the same affect if i were to turn the axles by the studs? I see what your saying, just concerned b/c ive never had that much play in any other r&ps
