I've got a few questions on Lockers for a 89 toyota. I've been looking and several brands. My question is the Lockrite. I know its prob a cheap route but Air lockers and Electric are expensive especially when I have to regear as well. Is the lockrite strong in other words will they hold up to 35's. I'm going to have to do a SAS conversion in the future so I need to be tight with the money. Any suggestion? Would it be better to wait and get an Electric or Air locker?

A slectable locker would be ideal. But you will not have any problems with a toy rear end with 35's and a lockright. A couple bangs and pops from time to time but nothing more. However if you go that route you may want to pick up a "PM" kit. It has the springs and dowels incase one gets bent or a spring wears out or breaks. call it cheap insurance.....

I've looked into another option and it seams feasable. I might switch to a 1997 and up rear end with an electric locker from factory. I've been able to locate one for a decent price. Have you heard anyone talk about any problems with these

Trail rig? DD?

The lockright will be plenty strong with 35 inch tires. They are good lockers, ive been running them in a DD (with 35's, 36's, and now 37's) with probably 40k on the rear lockright and then just trail miles on the front lockright. Some things you may want to consider - If you have a 5-speed get ready for a tire chirping good time until you get used to it, It will *sometimes* unload at the wrong moment and jerk the truck, but once you learn how to drive it with it, it wont be a prob.
As for the 97 and up rear axle with the trd elec locker. It would be just as cheap as if not cheaper to just install an ARB in the rear of your current axle.

It will be converted into a TR later down the road. I don't drive this truck alot. I've got another car but It will be driven to the trails :( I've found a 97 toyota axle with a locker for about $450.00 so I think I'm going that route. I know it will cost more to regear it but I have to do that already. Does this sound like a good Idea or is there some thing costly I don't know about?

Something like a lock-right does not require a re-gear after installation. It's better to find a geared third than a locked third, if you don't set up your own gears.

Lots of people have great luck with the toyota e-locker. There is some minor housing mods that have to be done. One of the studs of the factory housing is in the way of the locker. It gets removed and you can drill/tap a new hole in the housing in the right location. What ratio does the e-locker have in it..i would guess 4.56....but it could be 4.88. That option is going to be more clostly that just the lock-right because you are going to have to regear the 7.5 front you have now...then when you do the SAS you have have to regear that axle. (or you may be thinking about down taking the e-locker down to a 4.10....)

Just throwing out options for you. There is also a cable conversion you can look into.
