They are putting in a foundation for a new machine at work, and in the process of digging a 50'x80' hole, 19 feet deep, they found some nice granite boulders. I borrowed mom and dads F350 dumptruck and hauled a couple loads yesterday. I checked all the tires every time before I left, and they were holding air fine, and properly inflated. Today, I went and got a 3rd load, and on the way home, had a tire come apart. The tread on the right rear outside tire separated completely from the carcass. Ok, that sucks, no big deal, just change it out. Went to jack it up, and the leaky bottle jack was so leaky that I had to call a friend to bring another. No biggie, threw the spare (with a dryrotted sidewall) on, and headed down the road. I'm only 10-11 miles from home...

About 5 miles later, I hear psssh psssh psssh as the tire turns. I pull over at a nice big flat parking lot. The sidewall in the spare that I just changed has turned into an escape route for the air. So I call up my parents and get a ride to my shop. I've got two good load range E tires with 50% tread, so I put one on the rim from the first flat tire that had the tread seperate, and put the other tire on a spare rim I had at the shop. I head back to the truck and go ahead and swap out both tires on the right side, since the sidewalls had been rubbing together from all the low pressure activity. Great, so we're good to go.

Oh wait, the outside tire on the left if really bulging, and the inside one looks like it has no air because its an inch shorter than the outside. Get the gage, right at zero. Fortunately, I had brought the CO2 tank, just in case...aired it up, didnt' hear any leaks, 6 miles to go, we'll be fine. And were off! Finally!

Until about 2 miles later:kaioken: I hear that same psssh psssh psssh as the tire turns. That flat tire that I had just inflated now had a 2-3 inch crack in the tread that was helping the air get back to a lower pressure environment. Fortunately, I still had the tire from the right rear inside, so I jacked the truck up, pulled both tires off, put the not leaking one on, torqued everything down, and was back on the road in less than 10 minutes. They finally held together long enough to get home!
On the plus side, I got pretty good at changing tires on the dumptruck. First couple loads took about 3 hours round trip, today was almost 8 hours.

So anybody got a good set of 16" Load Range E tires?

And since everyone loves pictures:

There are some things I would fork over some cash on....decent tires is usually one of them. Craigslist it up for some good take-offs and replace all four across the ass end of it.

Oh, and take some pictures!

Should have called Doughboy to move those rocks for you.

I've always only bought brand new tires or really good shape takeoffs. My dad on the other hand likes whatever is cheapest sometimes...

I was wondering what prompted your "miss this guy" post, now it all makes sense. And let me tell you, getting rocks is a LOT of work, nobody is going to do it for free.

And since everyone loves pictures I added some to the first post.

Cliff notes: I changed a bunch of tires on a dumptruck. It sucked.

You forgot "I need tires" and "Rocks pichur, rox pitcher, rokz pix":flipoff2:

Sounds like you should have used your truck and the big trailer. Not like you couldn't get them off
Hindsight would agree with you, haha. Though the biggest ones probably would have warped the trailer coming off.

So what are you doin? Stocking up for your own private rock crawling garden?

I think the proper term is "hoarder"...
I don't have a fireplace, but I've got a lot of firewood.
I don't have a jeep that I actually wheel, but I have a nice rock garden.
Its all about the image man!

Really the plan was to put them on the fill in front of my building to keep the parking area stable, but my eyes got big and I ended up bringing home bigger rocks than originally planned, and now they will be used for landscaping and axle breaking.

The biggest ones are in the 4000lb range, medium ones in the 1500-3000lb range. The density of granite is ~170pounds per cubic foot. I'd consider selling some. Shoot me a PM and we'll figure it out.

I wouldnt mind having one in front of the shop Im about to build. I would rather my wife back into a bigass rock than into my shop. At least it will only damage her car instead of damaging her car and my shop.

I like the way you think!

That lesson was learned after she backed into one of my FIL's trailers. I dont know how she didnt see a 24' gooseneck trailer hooked to a white 2500HD.

But did she blame you ? My wife told me once it was my fault that she backed her 04 tj into my 70 chevy. I guess I shouldnt park at my own house.
