it helps to know what ther going to be installed on.
long tubes make the best power/tq. but short tubes are good for clearance. i dont think theirs much sound difference with a muffled exaust.
What problems are you running into exactly? Ive got Hedman Hedders on mine you can get them from jegs/summit or broncograveyard.com for $150-175. Mine are Chassis exit (they stay between the framerails) and they clear the clutch linkage on my 4 speed ok. Ive got dual exhaust the driverside pipe has to do some snaking around to pass by the Tcase, but It works. You can get fender exit headers from the same company that go over the frame through the fender liner and the exhaust would run outside the frame.
If you can find some shortys then they should be ok unless youre running a wild (drag) engine. You wont notice much difference in sound if youre running mufflers.
The problem I am running into is on the passenger side header I have to be able to fit the starter in between the headers and the block. Mine are also a chassis exit. The first set of headers I got were from summit and they fit fine but I could not put in the starter, the tubes were in the way of where the starter went. The second set they sent said would fit but they exited out the fenders and I have oversized (36's) tires so that will not work. Never used the shorty headers, was thinking they might be the way to go but I have been looking and have not found any they make to fit my engine : / ! Some of the headers I have found that look like would fit are for 2wd, really I dont know with headers how much that matters. I looked at bronco graveyard and theirs do not look right either. Might need to find someone who makes headers.
Hooker and Hedman should have what you're looking for. Only shorties I know off the top of my head available for that engine are th FC-3's from Sanderson. But you'll definitely have to drop some coin. When it was all said in done, mine were around $550 for my 77 250.
Agreed in the performance department when compared to LT's...but if you're in the market to upgrade stock mani's or wanna get rid of the look of stock mani's and add some bling, then they're alright, especially considering the 335 series is a red headed step child for the aftermarket. When I threw mine on, I picked up 15hp at the top of the powerband. But how often are you gonna have a 6000 pound rig revving that high except for in a mud pit.
The starter is tight on mine but it fits. I put a heat blanket on it since the original died after about a month. Ive got a napa rebuilt starter on it nothing fancy. There is about 1/4" of clearance on the frame side and the starter blanket actually touches the header the clearance is so tight on the starter side.
You may have to heat the tubes with a torch and ding them with a hammer if its close to going to get a little more room, or you could try a mini starter but thats around $150 for one from jegs.
I would say it depends on what you want in the end as well. Shortys tend to help lowend torque. Long tubes are better for rev HP. If you're gonna be lugin over rocks and such, you may be better off with stock manifolds. Also, the intake carb and headers need to be working "together". If you end up with stock manifolds, then a big carb and cam will actually hurt your power.
