Looking At Getting A Toyota Pickup

Long story short, I sold my jeep early last year and miss the hell out of it. A guy I work with has a 92 Toyota pickup extended cab v6. He said it runs good, interior is great. Needs new doors, bed alittle rough. It's an automatic. Unsure of mileage. Has a lot of extra parts, said I could have it for $1k. He is sopposed to get me more info and pics. I love the yotas, but what am I fixing to get into? I miss wheeling and want to get back to it.

3.0 v6 is notorious for head gasket issues. Is it 2wd or 4x4? If it's 4x4 it may have 4.56 or 4.88 gears in the axles. I know the 94 4 runner I'm parting is a 6 cylinder with automatic and it has factory 4.88. Should be a decent truck, especially for the$$$

Like he said, the price makes it appealing. The V6 is a big red flag, however it if has lived this long it will probably be fine.
this. People bag on the V6 but unless its is cherry and only like 100k miles, chances are that the bugs are worked out.
The auto kinda sucks too. Don't expect good gas mileage.
But for only $1k... the price is right.

An important question is - why is he willing to dump it with spare parts etc so cheap?

My 91 3.0 4runner had 280k on it when I sold it, and was running strong when I let it go too.

I hear alot of bad about the v6, but in MY experience it did alright.

The 3.0 has always gotten a bad rap for headgasket issues, not much more power than the 22RE, and the fuel mileage of a v6. HOWEVER, I have heard that if the headgasket recall has been done by Toyota, they regain the reliability. @DAWGTOY just rebuilt a 3.0 in a 4runner and it seems to have alot more power than a 22RE, but he also is very meticulus on his engine builds (balances the rods, good head work, etc). The auto trans has not changed much from the 80s thru the 90s. They are usually good transmissions. Keep in mind that the transfer case is chain driven on these and has a lot less aftermarket support.

What kind of wheeling do you plan on? Hardcore or just trail riding?

How long did it run strong after being sold :flipoff2:

It is 4x4. He has like 3 toyota's, he is a car/truck hoarder. He wants $1800 for it, but I can get it for $1k. And he had all kinds of extra parts, including a set of straight axles.

I'm not really concerned about gas mileage. It's going to just be a toy.

At least you got a decent truck to tow the toyota

This is so true. Hear all the time that the 3.0 have hg problems yet I've never actually seen any with it. My buddy has one with over 200k and still running add Toyota's do.

With how the reputation of 3.0 is you'd think they were made is the same place add a Ford 6.0.

Toyota over Jeep any day :flipoff2: But as stated above 3.0 do have head gasket issues, 3.4 are great, and 2.4 are about indestructible.
