Hey guys! Okay, I'm currently goin to school to major in Auto Technology, and I was thinking it would be cool if I could acquire a truck as a project so that I can put what I learn, to the test. I would use my current truck, but it's all I got. I was thinking maybe a 1984 Toyota pickup, but I wanted to get y'all's opinions. What would be best in the mud? I tend to look into lifts and tires and such more than I should in my full time. In my opinion, the bigger, the better. Anyway, what's y'all's opinions on my situation? Preciate y'all's input

Toyota is always a good start. How much $$$ you planning to spend on this project? That will make a huge impact on which direction you go.

I was thinking whatever the base price would be for the stock truck. I'm not sure why the base price would be, but I'm hoping less than $3k or $4k. The mods I was lookin at include a 7" suspension lift, on 38.5" Super Swampers and 15" Pro Comp Rock Crawler wheels. Possibly add a new Rock Defense front and rear bumper and a Nerf bar. The only problem, is that that would run me about $4.5k. Any recommendations that could help me save some money? I know this'll be expensive, and that it wont take an afternoon, but I am prepared to do whatever it takes to get it done. Any advice you have that could help me in any way is definitely appreciated!

People on this forum are always glad to help and share advice/experience. I think you have underestimated your budget by quite a bit for the mods you plan to do. Keep in mind that the larger tires will require changing the ring and pinion gears which will add $500+ to the budget (assuming you can install them yourself). You will also have to address the steering system, longer driveshafts, brake lines, etc. I'm not trying to discourage you from doing it though! Just do your research.

**Here is what I've found so far, but you're correct, I do keep forgetting I'd also have to extende the driveshafts. I'm pretty sure tho, that the Skyjacker lift I found includes extended brake lines, so I should be good there. With the steering system, what would you recommend for this setup? I've waned to do a build ever since I was 15 and got my first 4runner, but never truly looked into the technical side of it, as you pointed out. I'm still really wanting to do this and I know if I have any issues or questions, I know y'all can help

Haha I can only imagine!! A driveshaft for the model I'm looking for seems nearly impossible. My grandpa is a machinist, do you think I could just have him make me one?

If you are planning to drive on the road, then it needs to be balanced. If not, then you could probably make your own (assuming you can weld). Also, there are some members on here that run a home-built square driveshaft.

That's what I figured too. I probably wouldn't be driving on the road too much, probably mostly just to go wheeling. Do the square driveshafts usually do as good a job as the cylinder ones?

I wouldn't do square driveshafts on a street-driven rig, but that's just my opinion. I've never had them so take it with a grain of salt...

Yeah, I can understand that. I read somewhere on another forum that I might could take the stock driveshaft to a shop n have em extend it out for me, but idk. You think it'd do okay?

Yep, a ds shop could reuse the ends off of your stock ds and use a heavier gauge tube. Should set you back around $250.

That's not too bad, n it'd be a whole lot easier than finding one online. The other day when you told me I'd have to extend em out, I looked for an hour, but came up empty. I can't wait til I get the money to start this build!!
