Hi Everyone,

As the title states. Im looking for advice. Im in a pickle. I have a jeep project Ive been working on for years now . The first jeep I bought 17 years ago. Ive done an engine swap . Two different axle swaps . Tranny and T case swap . Pretty much everything. Unfortunately the YJ is not finished. About a year ago we had the shop broken into . All of the fab equipment mechanics tools and power tools were stolen. I literally have a partial ratcet set and a few other tools left. I could barely change the spark plugs if I wanted to. Much less weld in spring perches. Obviously thats not going to be enough to finish the project. Im not here for a pitty party but advice on either parting it out or selling as an entire project . What will net the most money back allowing me to repurchase my tool supply? If anyone has any great words of wisdom. It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks and happy new year
Patrick

Maybe someone in Charlotte could lend you tools and/or help you finish what needs to be done? A completed project will more than likely payout more money than parting out or selling a project. Good luck

Depends a lot on what parts it has in it, and if you have enough of the old parts to have a working YJ when you are done... The axles and engine are likely worth more than the whole project if we're talking V8 and one tons.

But really, if you don't have the tools to put it together, then you probably don't have the tools to take it apart to part it out either, if you are going to fund new tools with it, it seems you'll have to try and sell it whole.

Would it cost you more to replace all of your tools, or to pay someone to finish it? As stated above, you’ll get more for a finished jeep.

Yes its a pretty health chevy small block dana 60 and 14 bolt . Its close to done . But has been sitting a while . Whats the market these days for a complete v8 one ton YJ these days ?
And thank you guys for taking the time to respond.

You'll always make more money parting it out. That's why everyone has $30-50k in their rig that is worth $10k. But parting is a PITA and you can't control what sells in what order, and the money is made on the 500 little things, not the 10 big things. The only way to see it is to keep a good account of each piece you sold. $200 will get you a functional set of wrenches and sockets and a floor jack, and leave you with more satisfaction along the way.

Yes you are in a pickle and it sucks for you. I your situation I don't see how you can do much but to sell it as a project. The axles will sell first, then you have a non moving pile that you'll have for a while. You would be best off to show that the engine can run or at least turn, and show pics of the fab work so people aren't scared away. Probably a $2500 project Jeep...

There are lots of us that have unfinished projects sitting around. Usually it’s a lack of time due to work and or family commitments. If you really want to finish it someday tools are probably the cheapest component. Beg borrow or save up for the tools. If I had a Jeep that long and it was close to being done I would keep it. There are several vehicles I like to have back

It does have a lot of great components.
Well built 350
NV4500 /Dana 300
Dana 60
14 bolt
All has less then 1k miles on
I guess I just hate seeing it sitting there

Insurance is a nice thing to have. Just saying!

There's not much sense in selling parts to buy tools and equipment if you just sold all of the things you needed to work on and then you'll have to buy the parts again.

I'd just save some money.

Long story behind that actually. Little too personal for online . But thank you sir

My jeep became a project when it developed death wobble and an engine knock just before I got blindsided by the big D.

Still, I somehow managed to hang on to it and it sat in my old yard for a year, a buddy's woods for two years, now it's been at my new house for almost a year. One of these days I hope to be back on my feet enough to put a little money into fixing it. I park in front of it every day.

You've had it for 17 years. Keep your jeep.

17 years that's a keeper in my eyes especially with that much work done!! slowly save for new stuff While you wanna get back at it, dunno your situation but most the fab stuff you need can be had at a pawn shop/fb yard sale sites or on here for cheap... harbor freights stuff has insane warrantys not saying it's all good or go buy all cheap harbor freight crap but impact sockets, jacks, impact wrenches/ratchets, etc are not Bad tools I've had Pittsburgh impacts from hf for 3 years no issues... I'm sure you know most of this, but you can get a Pretty nice shop setup to start the finishing process for 1k with every item having a minimum 3yr warranty!? just my opinion nice jeep tho! Hope ya keep it!!

I am another vote for keep and restock. Unless your just plain done. As in never gonna wrench again done. Other wise rebuild the tool arsenal and be choosey. By now you know what's important and what's not so useful.

And insurance. These days for me it's a given to insure tools. To many thieving dick heads and to little time to recoup.

Another vote to keep it and recollect tools. I second the HF tools.. just be picky what you get, their air tools are decent, Pittsburgh Pro series is the only sockets, ratchets, wrenches, etc worth buying. Stay away from the plain Pittsburgh stuff, the quality isn't there, unlike the pro series. You'll see what I mean when you go look at them. I personally rock the gear wrench brand stuff from advance, just because I'm always in there getting parts. But the socket design to grip bolt heads works well, perhaps too well because the sockets crack on the points of the hex under high forces.
