I'm looking at buying a dump truck but there's the issue of title being lost. The guy I am possibly buying from got the truck from his brother when the brother passed away. He never bothered having the title or switching it over because it was only used on farm roads. Now he can't find the title. Me and my dad have known the brothers for a very long time, so know it's all legit. The question now is how to go about getting the truck over to my name. Does the guy we getting it from have to apply for a lost / replacement title, wait for it to come then sign over to me? Is there such a thing as an abandoned car title? The truck hasn't been tagged since 96. Any help / suggestions will be very appreciated.

The person that is in charge of the estate of the brother can apply for the lost title. The form is a MVR-4. If you get a hard copy of this form from the DMV, it will be just like a regular title on the back (place for purchaser, etc,) It can be sent off and will be returned to the buyer like any other title (takes a little longer).

If you download the MVR-4 off the DMV website, it will only have the front page.

Also, if you can find an old registration for the truck, use it to fill out the info on the lost title form. They can be picky about names, addresses, etc. For example, is it registered with the middle name or middle initial.

There is also another DMV form for any heirs of the estate to sign. All heirs sign the same form and each signature is notarized.
