AX5 tranny
i was taking it off the trailer in low range, as i crested the ramps it stalled but i had enough momentum to keep rolling so as i rolled of the ramps i popped the clutch out and back in, it started right up. i then drove it around for a few miles and when i got home i went to back up and it sounded like i broke a ujoint or had gears grinding.
so i tried 4h & 4l forward and back and all made the same sound in reverse. any ideas????

it sounds like the noise is in the transfer case but it goes forward with no issues or sound. could it be the chain tensioner may have broken?
i plan to pull the top cover off tomorrow to look at it.

The transfer case has nothing to do with reverse. More than likely you broke the shift fork for reverse in the transmission. It's a pretty common problem. They are also bad about the clip ring coming off of 5th gear.

I broke the shift fork for 2nd gear in my YJ.

Here is an exploded diagram of the AX5 trans from Quadratec's website.

http://www.quadratec.com/advisor/jeep_oem_replacement_parts/manual_transmission/ax4_5.php

Part #11 in the diagram is probably what you need.

If you tear into the transmission be sure to check the 5th gear clip ring. It is to the right of Part #54 (which is 5th gear). They don't offer the clip but it's just a regular clip ring that can be bought about anywhere. It is common for the clip to pop off.

kyleg, do you know if i drop the tcase can i pull the back of the tranny off to remove the parts that i need to inspect? i already posted looking for a new tranny. i had a bad week where 4 out of 5 of my ride are now broken. oddly enough all but 1 brok on the street just riding around---bummer---

oh and yes 5th is out also... what would be an inexpensive replacement tranny for the ax5- what else would bolt right in? would the ax15 be stronger and bolt right up? im 23 spline i believe

Yes, the AX15 is a stronger transmission although I'm not sure if it will swap in or not.

I would just pull the transmission out, it will make it alot easier to work on.

When you start taking the transmission apart, the input/output and gear shafts all ride in a plate in the transmission. These shafts all have needle bearings that can fall out when the shafts are removed. Just be careful when you remove the shafts.

The shift rods have spring loaded balls on the end at the plate in the transmission. Just another thing to be careful with when taking the trans apart.

Overall, it's not too difficult to work on. The website I posted has a good exploded diagram and is a good place to get parts.

Anymore questions, just let me know.

anyone have a tranny torn apart that wants to sell some of the gears? i took mine apart to see why it wasnt working and found the output gear and the reverse gears have almost no teeth left on them.
so im screwed unless i can find good used gears or a new tranny and so far i havent had an tranny offers except for a 6 cylinder one.
