.... and how to go about UN-losing one.

But first, what the heck do people do with titles?
We have a really nice fireproof lockbox that holds all of our valuable papers so we don't lose them.

Anyway ..... kinda cruising craigslist looking at motorcycles and boats.
Seems like 50% of vehicles there don't have a title.

My only experience with a lost title was the person we sold our mobile home to years ago.
They lost the title and the last I heard they were gonna have to go to court to get it fixed!
(Their fault because they didn't get it transferred, still in my name, and the company that financed the home no longer exists.) I gave them a notarized copy of the bill of sale ..... they lost theirs also, and a notarized letter approximating when we paid it off.

How do you get a replacement title?

If they are the rightful owners, and simply lost the piece of paper, all they have to do is apply for a Duplicate title:
NCDOT: Replacement & Duplicate Title

If its one of those shady "i got it from my sister's ex-boyfriend's brother's meth-dealer so I can get it but I don't have it" kind of scenarios, then I'd have a lot less confidence.

MVR-4 form if you are selling it. Lost title form if you just want a duplicate for your records.

Otherwise you'll have to apply for a bonded title, convince the dmv you tried to find the proper owner and title, get a surety bond, have it inspected by the DMV/hp inspector for your area to say it isn't stolen and is titleable
