That looked exactly like my wife and I on our way back to our Tulum, MX resort in a smart car. I forgot about the 10” tall, 4’ wide “speed bumps” on their version of the interstate. When I noticed it at the last second, it was too late to slam on the brakes, told wife to hold on! I am not sure how far we were in the air, but the whole car cleared the speed bump, nose diving and bouncing once we landed. I was expected a WTF were you thinking from the wife, but she looked at me and we both busted out horse laughing

Ive been thinking about this and it bothers me.
Like you I understand accidents happen. I'm always horrified when you hear the story of a kid left in a car. But I'm also cautious because I almost did the same when my oldest was young. He slept I drove right past the sitter and took him to the jobsite with me... before realizing I was a dumbass...Ive often been terrified by what could have been. So I have a ton of Grace for accidents.
When a parent has an accident they are without exception - as far as I can tell - charged and convicted of negligent homicide or other such charges...and I get it.
Now when ever a bad guy shoots or hurts a K9 he is charged with assaulting a police officer. By that logic, shouldnt this deputy be charged with killing a law enforcement officer? I mean the logic bridge is pretty tight..

I believe @jeepinmatt and I know of the exact scenario you almost experienced actually happen unfortunately. I don't remember but I don't think she suffered any criminal charges but I can't imagine the guilt she lives with every day. That's why it's hard to decide whether to be angry or sad. A smart man once said something that has stuck with me ever since... "The older I get, the more gray everything is" life isn't as black and white as it seemed when I was younger. His name rhymed with Jon

And yes, the person we know of never faced any charges that I'm aware of, but has the burden of dealing with it every day for the rest of their life and is still struggling with it a lot, even though it was many years ago.

I'd request a trial by jury. Pretty strong chance one (or 12) out of 12 would not convict.
