Lots of interesting news today

I inadvertently saw the video earlier today. There was no rappelling, just a rapid sliding down a rope and hitting the ground hard.
Ditto, on a Reddit thread that started before he'd passed at the hospital. It got me curious to find the full story.

There should be available industrial sites around the nation. If the local politicians would focus on data centers opening in those areas, this could solve some blight and keep the data centers from taking up new space that could be used for better purposes.
There are empty manufacturing plants all over NC. I don't know why they have to focus on farmland and wooded property. I guess the cost of renovation is more than building new. But, idgaf. Make them pay to play.

That's a big part of it. I'd wager most of the time the existing buildings aren't usable so you're talking cost of complete demo on top of development.
Plus you have to work within existing zoning that may be limiting, while it's easier to convince a county Council to grant waivers on an R1 or convert for you.

The other thing, and often just as big, it proximity to existing data lines and power infrastructure. Dropping one in the middle of a developed area that doesn't have major fiber and power and water infrastructure already existing means a lot of retrofitting that disrupts other businesses.
The big one that was just proposed and shot down here, that's a closed golf course, was specifically chosen bc of proximity to a NG pipeline and water source and only having to tear up residential/ rural areas to connect the fiber line.

I can’t think of a much better use than a golf course. Better than building cookie cutter houses.
As much as I'm not a fan of development... We need more housing for people to live in.
We don't have the same need for the AI data centers.

The more popular conversion around here is solar farms

Another consideration, A Data Center actually uses a lot LESS water than a Golf Course typically does ;)
