Lower Back Surgery

This thread scares me. I finally got an MRI done on Friday after two months of pain and numbness from a car wreck. Should get the official results today or tomorrow. Wish me luck.

Dr. Recomendation: In W-S I saw Dr. Spivey for the Pain Management. He gave me the Steroid Injections in my back and I have had no pain for several weeks now. I doubt the pain would come back to be honest. But I am going in for a Microdiscectomy next week. This will be removing the herniated portion of my L5 disc that is pushing on my S1 Sciatic. My Only issues right now are no strength in my right foot that has left me with a limp and decreased balance. I can't run or play with my kids without knowing I'm gonna bust my ass.

Can't recall the Surgeons name right now, but So far he seems like someone I'd recommend. I'll let you know after the surgery. He's also in W-S and in the Forsyth Medical system.

Had spinal fusion of L4 and L5 in 2004. I'm pretty mobile now, have good days and bad days. I have pretty bad arthritis though. The worst part is the pretty constant back spasms at night. I'm a security system installer, so I'm in crawlspaces and attics a lot, and work pretty long hours. I'm pretty happy though, because I could barely walk before my surgery. The disc was pretty much gone and it was bone on bone. Good luck man, I highly recommend Dr. Maxy with Carolina Ortho in Hickory. He rotates between different offices so you may be able to catch him in a Carolina Ortho office in your area. If you have any questions, fire away.

I had my #2 in 09/10 for my L leg. Hurt bad standing leg is fine now but small pains in big toe. Had my first about 8 years ago let that one go to long. Only live 6 miles from work would have to get out after 3 miles and walk around. Only hurt sitting down driving a car Ciro just kept saying it will get better. Even after i said i cant feel my rt. foot. Same Doc. did both of mine. Toes on rt. foot still numb and never will be right. He said the disc was against the nerve to my rt. leg and flattend it out. Cant stand for anyone to touch my rt. toes (will kill someone for that). Have bad days and good days. Best things i can say is dont be jumping off things and find a damn GOOD Doc. Mine said I will be looking a fusion in about 8-10 yrs. Ready for warm weather and rides

As I read this thread I'm having phantom back pains from the pooh being scared out of me. Back problems are my number one fear. I try to take care of it but I imagine the years of abusing it didn't help. I've been lucky so far with no issues but
it's always in the back of my mind.
Good luck PJ, if you can stand it I wouldn't race or push it at all until next year. In the long run (you know...your kid) a year is nothing.

Laying here in the hospital bed right now. I had my micro-discectomy yesterday morning. Boy they have some gooooooooood drugs here!

Now I have 1 week of bed rest with minimal activity. Then6 weeks no heavy lifting or twisting. We'll see how all this turns out. I'll keep you posted.

Oh, and why is it 95% of nurses are HOT?

I have a herniated disk in my back but no surgery. The physical Therapy got me rolling again but continued core strengthening keeps me healthy. Keep up the exercises they give you to do, even when you feel great.

man....hate to hear about all of these lower back problems. i too have a couple of torn disk in my lower back and i've in and out of mutliple dr office trying different things for relief.

i am scheduled for RF ablasion this week (burning the nerve endings around the injury) to try to relieve the pain. anyone have any experience with this procedure?

i have had cortiozone shots a couple of times, but only get a day or two of relief.

to the OP, regarding ways to be more comfortable while wheeling....i have used a power inverter with a heating pad on several occasions. in my rig at times in my daily driver.

hope everyone heals up.

Have had 4 back operations so far. Hopefully done. Last one was in December and it was 6 screws and three rods between L5, L4, S1. The were put in to replace the broken hardware from the 2008 fusion. I went back to work too soon after the '08 fusion. I work on planes. Take it easy!!

They are not, it's those goooood drugs LOL

Hope you feel better sooner than later.

Mine has been flairing upp for a couple days, the anti-inflamatorys were no help. Went to my Family Dr. & he adjusted me voila! pain is gone, for now.

Crap PJ I hate to hear it! I think Terry rubbed off on you, that's what happened.

Seriously, best wishes from both of us for a speedy and full recovery.

Brent, 5% are ugly! That leaves the other 95%! Simple math, with age it will change! Take care man!

Home now and walking around. No stitches just a tape patch over the 1" incision. Doc said the nerve looked to be in good shape and I should have a complete recovery. He said too often people wait too long and end up causing permanent damage to the nerve. I went in early, within 6 months of initial injury.
