I dont have an old starter to compare to. Is the gear supposed to be that recessed? Am i supposed to pull it forward?

Any good tips on making sure it is all aligned?

You should be able to slide it right out by putting something behind the pinion. A feeler wire at the root of the starter pinion tooth to check clearance, don't know what the clearance is supposed to be. Probably roughly around 0.020" or something, definitely look that up because I have no idea.
LS starters usually don't need to be shimmed, but good to check.

It's recessed because it's on free spin. I think it retracts in and out but I don't know 100%

When i saw it, i wondered that, that maybe when the system charges before start, it actuates out so it doesnt spin nonstop with the motor while running.

It extends and then spins. Not really familiar with any that dont.

What ^^ he said. Just bolt it up and roll...and don't break the trigger wire stud. They're freaking tiny!

Gotta go find another starter mount bolt. the starter came only with one.... :(
