I'd really like to get an E-locker with limited slip, but since thats not an option for the 9", I don't really want an ARB (don't like the full spool feeling when locked), and also don't really want the hassle of running airlines and worrying about all that.

So what are the advantages/disadvantages of the lunchbox style lockers vs a detroit in a 9"? I can get either one for about $250-300 (used detroit), so the price difference isn't major.

I personally prefer a Detroit over a lunch box style for a 9". Even better than a Detroit IMO is a Yukon Grizzly.
Obviously you know this is the best time to 35 spline it...

If the shafts are free, its the best time, haha. 4.6 stroker, 4.88's, and 35" KM2's should be fine on 31 spline. If they were 28 spline I'd consider it.

Why do you prefer the Detroit/Grizzly? I know the differences, but I'm playing dumb to get more thorough opinions.

Probably because of Yukon's customer support and because they seem less prone to exploding if a shaft breaks. I've broken a shaft and subsequently lost a Detroit. 500 bucks later, I was rolling again. Should have replaced it with a Grizzly, that was in my CUCV, I did get a Grizzly for the AAM 11.5 in my Silverado, cant wait to install it.

The Detroit/ Grizzly's are just more robust than a lunchbox style. I prefer the Grizzly over a Detroit due to their warranty and the fact that they will cover associated items that are broken due to a failed locker (i.e. shafts, hubs, spindles, etc).

When I get around to building a 9" for my rig I'll be using exclusively Yukon products for that very reason (3rd member, gears, grizzly, 35 spline shafts)

The carrier is fairly small on a 9" to start with, and with the Detroit being made to optimize the space there is to work with I would rather go with that. Rather have a purpose-built locker than wedging a lunchbox into that small space.

I've never seen a good 9" lunchbox locker. They just don't work as smoothly. Detroits are much better. I have no experience with the Yukon. Now the ARB, well that is the ticket. I love mine.

31 spline will hold up just fine. I would get a nodular 3rd though.
