m8000 rebuild issue

I'm rebuilding a m8000 that I recently got because it would not free spool.
Well I got to taking it apart and it looks like it has been sitting under water for a couple years.
I can not get the ring that slides to engage free spool out of the housing.
does anyone have any ideas as how to get this ring out?

I had one the same way years ago and best I remember after I let it sit in parts washer solvent for a few days I ended up drilling 2 small holes in the end if the housing so I could punch it out and then tapped the holes for screws.

Got it out. I ended up knocking it down on a wooden dowel about 20 times after letting it soak. I wanted to avoid drilling if at all possible
