Macdaddy Spin Off Thread

I got pulled over in South Dakota for a busted tail light. When the cop pulled me I gave him my license and registration and when he came back to the jeep he says my license was suspended. I had no idea that it was and because I had just recetly moved I could not find my insurance info which did not help the situation. So I get put in handcuffs and taken to the clink the jeep gets towed and put in the impound. The charges were driving with a suspended license, no proof of insurance, no seat belt, no front license plate, and impaired vision due to stuff hanging from the review mirror.

wait, what kind of stuff?

Also, I always get a lawyer, cheaper insurance!!! plus sometimes they know ways around to getting a better deal. Mine got my mom off of 98 in a 75, only thing she ended up with is an improper equipment. This is a women that has a 6 page record.

I have had a few tickets over the last decade or so...

I pay roughly 80 bucks for most lawyer fees....and then court costs...

I once and only once paid the ticket off and not hired a lawyer...only to think it would teach me a lesson on not to speed... wrong.. it taught me to always hire a lawyer. My insurance at the time jumped from 125 a month (I was 22 with a brand new wrangler and the best darn coverage i could fine) and it jumped to 225 a month... That went on for 3 years... so, I would have to say, hiring the lawyer for 80 bucks would have been better... but thats just my 2 cents!!!

Please post pics so the rest of us can LOL.

It's uncanny.

Since the horse is dead and beat, I'll kick it soem more.
Pay the lawyer.
Joel, in Forsyth Co., the lawyer can do a "plea bargain" where if the ticket is < 15 over, they change it to Improper Equipment. It is still a "guilty" conviction, but carries no insurrance points. But ONLY if you do not have a similar conviction on your record within the last 3 (?) years.

Oh but maybe you DO have one... That's ok, there's a trick, lawyer explained thsi to me once. Sneaky! ... it turns out that Improper Equipment convictions and the fact it came as a plea bargain is maintained by the county in their records. But... NOT the main Raleigh DMV.
Soooooo.... before court, you (well the lawyer) gets your driving record NOT from teh county records, but from Raleigh. This costs an extra small fee - but worthwhile.... he takes THAT copy to the judge, judge sees a clean record....
I have done this twice.

Shady? Yep. All part of "the game".

Interesting information. Thanks Dave.

This has been fairly interesting for me to read. I wouldn't have thought to do hire a lawyer unless I was going to lose my license.

I've hired them for almost every ticket I've had...even for one I got for doing 60 in a 55 (for this one, the lawyer laughed, and just charged me half-price...I just didn't want to have to drive to Greensboro to handle it myself)...

only one I've ever handled myself was a running a redlight ticket, which I got dismissed...

generally been less than $200 for lawyer, court cost and ticket...which would definitely been less than the increase in insurance for three years...

mine did go up at times (some tickets reduced to a non-moving violation, like improper equipment...while some reduced to "exceeding a safe speed", which is actually a much better charge to have on your record than running ## in a ## zone ticket)...

you can also do the standard Defensive driving class, 50 dollars + court fees and stuff. You have to be >15 miles over WITHOUT DA permission. You can take it once every three years (im sure most of you knew that). That drops the ticket to Improper Equipment, and thus no moving violation. (This goes by county I believe..) Its basically the same as the Plea Bargin, but without the title, and with a 4 hour class or something.

You can also do the PJC (Prayer for Judgement Continuted) which effectively states that if you get another ticket in the next 3 years, you have to pay both the original, and the new ticket.

However, the PJC shows as a Guilty plea, and if you end up in some crazy situation where someone calls up your driving record, this may look sketchy.

Joel, call a lawyer and ask... it doesn't hurt just to ask also as far as the driving record goes some but not all officers bring a record to court. I know from experience! So don't rely on that alone.Good luck I'm routin' for ya'. I hate cops!:shaking:
