Thought I'd see if anybody had any interest here...

I'm headed towards buying a big mill and lathe. I'd like to take some of the machine shop classes at our local community college, but really don't need or want to invest that time, over that long a period.

Which leads me to talking to the machine shop lead, and the possibility of doing a short class under continuing ed, that would maybe be a couple of weekends, or several nights for a couple of weeks, or maybe even a few days during the week when school is not in session.

Cover things like safety, basic setup, common machine shop operations, techniques, tooling, etc. Not enough to go out and get a job, but enough to be safe and able when making your own stuff.

Post up here if you are interested. We'd need 10 or so to be worthwhile to pursue.

I'd be interested, assuming it'd be doable based on the times...

I wish I could show ya all I've learned over the past 10 years in the machining business. I don't know that I have the patients for manual machines anymore. CNC's make a man lazy!

best of luck in what you take. Be sure to write down some speeds and feeds for mills, drills, etc. When they're your own tools you don't want to burn them up. Also grab the knack of sharpening a drill bit by hand on a bench grinder. It will save time and $$$!
