I think that I have found an upgrade to an existing product. However, I don't know where to begin looking to have a proto type made.

Basically what I need. Is a 3/8" rod with a square milled into the top and then a small thread 8/32 or 10/24 hole in the end. The entire thing is only going to be around 1 1/4 inches long.

Here is a diagram of the part.

Where could I have this made? I was thinking of this prototype is just regular carbon steel, but if it is feasable the end product would need to be aluminum or stainless.

I guess the biggest question is how much would something like this run me?

Most machine shops will have to mill a small radius around the corners of that square. How tight do the corners need to be? Aluminum would probably be easier to mill it out of to begin with so it shouldn't be more expensive but if there is going to be a lot of wear on this part, stainless or steel would be better.

corners don't have to be tight. There is an arm that bolts on to the part, hence the threaded middle. But, i wouldn't guess it would have to be too tight. I'm not quite a machinist.

There are a bunch of CNC shops around. How many you looking for? For a prototype, just find a small shop and they will do it by hand. Once things are dialed in, then get a CNC shop to program the part on a CNC maching and go at it!

BTW, 8-32 or 10-24 threads won't hold in aluminum too good. Just depends on what its used for I guess

Wyrick Machine and Tool in Pleasant Garden off 421 south of Greensboro. 336-841-8261. Chet Wyrick is the owner and is a master machinest and could probably use some work during these times. Real nice guy and easy to work with.

Vise, hack saw, file, drill, tap for the true low buck prototype.

it is a replacement actuator for a valve. They come stock with a plastic piece. I have seen many broken, any many complained about. Thanks for the input. Really the tolerance of a 3/8" bolt are really all that are required.

I'll pm you back soonish

Id machine it for ya if you were closer to the VA area... Shouldnt be much to get that made tho a good machinist should be able to produce that in no time!
