Looking for someone that can drill and tap the output shaft of an sm465 transmission (with shaft in the case).

I've tried one in Durham and Hamilton machine in Raleigh. Hamilton did this for a friend 4 years ago but now says he can't figure out how to do it(after my trans sat at his shop for 3 weeks). I guess they just don't want to mess with it. His excuse was his brand new carbide bit couldn't even stratch it. BS

I'm getting frustrated as this one thing is holding up the rest of my build.

Willing to drive almost anywhere in the state.

Please help me!!!

With a carbide drill you will. But you have to have sharp edged tools with a minimal T-land and a good edge hone (which most carbide drills have).

I was under the impression that it's just a hardened shell and but the inside is not?

I'm adapting the sm465 to a fj40 3spd case with Orion 4.1 gears. I need a bolt and washer the hold the input gear of the case to the trans output shaft. Been done numerous times.

i was thinking it was hardened on the outside also. they do this alot on np231 hck n tap slip yoke eliminators.

install it back in the truck. put in low gear. ( no driveshafts) use a small drill to make a center point. alot of guys do this on jeeps. the rotation of the shaft will help center the drill (if the surface is flat)

be sure you can hold the drill straight...

Any decent shop should be able to do this. As far as I know, it is only case hardened. Which should be less than and eighth deep till you get to soft metal. Call different shops and ask if they have a horizontal bed mill. That would be the easiest way I can think of doing a complete transmission. But even if it is hardened through, carbide can handle it.
