Anyone know what these bits are for? I got probably 100 of them of assorted sizes in a random lot of drill bits at an auction a few years back. The threads are roughly 1/4" fine thread. I assume they are for some sort of machining rig. The auction was an estate auction and the guy that died was a mechanic for pan am back in the day. The other regular bits I got are the best cutting bits I've ever used. They are better than anything I've ever bought at fastenal. Have I been wasting these little threaded bits, ie should I have put them on ebay and made money on them?

They're just for a certain type of drill. You can buy them anywhere that carries a large selection; McMaster Carr sells them for example. They're a standard 1/4-28 thread. To answer your question, they're not precious or particularly valuable, they're just drill bits. They will likely be pretty good quality though, for standard drill bits.

I guess I should mention that you can get 1/4 hex adapters or round adapters for those, so you can use them in a standard drill.

I just chuck the hell out of them and go to town on'em! After getting hung up a time or two the threads get cleaned off then they work just like a regular bit!

Drill bits, are one of those items, you get what you pay for! I've gone through a crap load of them, even what I thought was better, at Lowe's or HD. Few years back I was shopping at WT Tool, which left Charlotte, & watched a guy buy some bits. Then I talked to the Salesman, about bits. They had 4 or 5 ranges, from Cheap, to Machinist. I bought a general set, that was 1 below the machinist. I'll never go back to the shit bits again! Quality Matters!
