Magnets are bad.....umm kayyyy? (NWS)

I guess put it on the list with:
Don't run with scissors!
Your mouth will stay like that!
Don't fry bacon nude and...
Don't play with large magnets!

The thing is, they really aren't that "large". Just super super dense and strong.
That's a big part of what makes them so dangerous, you can't really get a perception of how "strong" they are and have no idea where the safety Gauss line is... and being relatively strong makes them more mobile (e.g. projectile).

Once those magnets are attached, how do you get them apart??

Ive got a a few of the 1" N50's from K&J Magnetics. They are dangerously strong, but probably wouldn't crush your bone. I have plenty of bruises from pinched skin and flesh. But they are fairly brittle, so when they crash into each other, they crack and break easily.

Pass electricty through them, lol - do it in te hright direction and it reverses the fields.

Sooooo in our lab, we had these GIANT speakers, the drivers/coil were like 6-8" across. They were dismantled and we decided to take them apart to get down to the core magnet just to have/play with.
It took a whole afternoon of prying w/ many screwdrivers (tire spoon style) to get them apart. What made it hard was that the screwdrivers/wrench/prybar/anywthing would just cling to the side, lol.

I have seen some people use the magnets in old speakers and put them in the bottom of some kind of container to keep nuts and bolts while they are working on something (that way they don't roll around and don't fall out if you accidently tip over the container.

The head of survey department here supplies every field crew suburban with old speaker magnets to hold down maps on the hood or side to read on windy days. I use them to pick up nails or screws if I drop a bunch or out of the yard / burn pile. I bet The Professor would have used the heck out of them with his coconut creations!

I mashed my right middle finger just like that by dropping a wood trailer tongue on it. I lost part of my bone and all of my fingernail exactly like that dude. I called the doc a liar when he said my fingernail would grow back but believe it or not it did.

Hey Ratlabguy...One of my neighbors told me a story of him working at a hospital or something. He was in a mri room, or something like that(i forget) but he said that a man came in and within minutes that guys face started bleeding in 3 spots. The magnets in the room were supposedly pulling tiny schrapnel pcs. from his face, that he got in Viet-Nam. Could this be true?

very very very unlikely. At least unless there is more to the story
In an MRI (like pretty much all circular magnets) the strongest part of teh field is in the very center of the coil, strength increase in not linear but exponential as you get closer to center - or rather, as you move away the decay is inverse expenoential.
Now teh field oin those things is crazy strong, but for that kind of effect you'd have to be pretty close to the center of it.
Even then, tehre have been only a handful of documented cases of shrapnel actually coming out of anybody.
Not saying impossible, but def not from just being "in teh room". And any tech worth their salt will not let anybody anywhere close to the machine unless they've been screened beforehand.

cant remember the entire story, but they were in more than just the room. They were supposedly working on something, or building the machine.Definatly in the danger zone, close to the magnets...supposedly. And he did say the metal faced guy was only another guys helper.
I will ask him about that again.
