As ya'll know, I am pretty new to the Jeep world so I turn humbly to ya'lls mercy for some knowledge.
Scenario: 89 YJ 4 cylinder under construction with a Front D44 and a AMC20 Rear out of a 84 Waggoneer, 3.73 gears and running 35" tires on a SOA.
My experience level: Knuckle pounder, common sense mechanical guy with not too much experience but eager to wrench and get dirty. Good mechanic tool set available but no specialty tools.
Questions:
I wanted to get rid of the vacuum actuator and after I contacted the guys at warn they suggested I buy the manual lockouts for my axle and put them in.
Should I just buy another vacuum actuator harness and keep it that way?
Would I be happy with that?
Should I get the manual hubs?
Should I get a lockers instead?
What else do I need if I get a locker?
I would like to also regear my axles to 4.56.
Is it something I can do at home with a couple of buddies?
How much is fair to pay for someone to help me do it?
Anyone interested? *Hint, *Hint

well is the jeep driven on the street like a DD or is it just a toy?

you could keep the vacuum disco if you want, but i would say to try and find a long side axle shaft out of a non-disco waggy, and get rid of it all together....

The lockouts and/or locker doesnt ness depend on this.... if its trail only, then you could probly be fine with the slugs still in, but if its driven on the street alot you may want to put lockouts on it...

If you are planning on regearing, this would be the time to put in a locker too.... and maybe even rebuild the axle (bearings, seals)... my advice is that if you dont have any experience with regearing axles, you may want to have someone else with experience do it or atleast help you greatly... and the prices for this ranges...

Welcome to the Jeep club and good luck with your build

The Jeep is actually my third vehicle so it will mostly be driven to the little grocery store, cruising with my three little boys around town, light or slightly mild trails, some mud holes, ocasional drive to work on a nice sunny day, nothing really big or extreme like most people do.

What should I look for on that longer axle shaft? Year wise? I really dont know what years were non-vacs.

Thank you for the welcome and the response paradise. Beer is on me when I met you.

ummm i dont really recall what years they were non-disco, im sure that others could pipe in with that... but im thinkin that 84-85 comes to mind as being the years that were disco.... but i could be wrong
