How does the top brace work. i guess you cut off the old shock mount, but then it only mounts to one side. there is the metal sleeve but that does not fit in the shock bushing. I guess you have to mount it to one side not directly in the center but that seems it woul not be offering the support it is supposed to be providing

I think it's only supposed to offer support for the axle housing. Never seen one in person, so take that for what it's worth. I read the instructions on the Marlin site and I remember it saying you were suppose to cut off the old shock mount and then the shock would mount on the brace. (Is the gist I got.) If the shock only mounts on one side I'd probably fab something to get it to be a bit stronger. Sucks to have to fab new parts though.

if i remember correctly, the Marlin ones use only a single shear mount for the shocks (not the best idea, but i guess it works or he wouldnt do it that way) The shock just mounts to one side of the brace. I prefer the Trail-Gear braces since they use a much more stout top brace that the shock goes inside of (like a stock shock bracket). Looks to be much stronger. I can get some pics of my trail gear one later this afternoon if you want.

ive seen the trail gear ones, a better design in my opinion. i bought the marlin kit second hand or i would have went with trail gears. i think Marlins brace is stouter but the shock mount is gay. still don't know what the metal bushing is for.

i think the strength difference between the two gussets is minimal if any at all. They are both damn near identical (other than shock mount style). I never liked the idea of the single shear shock mount and IF i had ended up with Marlins kit I think i would have made a different shock mount style. I have no idea what the metal bushing is for...i thought it would have fit in the hole for the shock to sit on....but i guess not, lol
