What do u do with a used mattress? I'm sure there is someone that is sleeping on the floor somewhere that would love to have anything. Will salvation army or goodwill take them?

someone threw one out at my old apartment complex. They didnt put it in the dumpster, just against it. Damn thing sat there for a month or two until I got tired of looking at it and took a sledgehammer and axe to it. Chopped it in to bits and dropped it in the dumpster. Trash guys couldn't see it.

Moral of the story is, used mattresses aren't generally favorably looked upon by any organization. x2 on the free Craigslist.

I had an old twin or full we didnt want, so we slid it under a queen bed. Its there for company. I busted up the box spring and threw it in the trash.

They have to be given away, not sold. At least in North Carolina - don't know about anywhere else. It is illegal to sell a used mattress in NC. You can sell a bed frame, but the mattress has to be free. Weird but true.

I seriously doubt you could even donate it to a shelter. They all use cots. We just payed to give some to the land fill. They were hand me downs that my wifes family have had for years judging by their weight. Google old matresses and you may get discusted by what you learn or like me intrigued by the way they get heavier with use.
:shaking:150 lb. matress equals to many relatives slept in the same bed.:shaking:

I saw some idiots moving and cleaning out an old, old house near here a few years ago. They had a bonfire in the rural yard w several large mattresses on it burning and smoking like crazy, while they stood around in the swirling toxic smoke I smelled while driving by!!! You can't fix stupid.

We have a pretty massive firepit (15' Diameter) at a buddies house where we usually have big bon fires and what not, a buddy wanted to burn his old mattress and box springs, he did. We didn't stand around and inhale whatever fumes may be, but it burned pretty quick, leaving only the metal, which I suspect will be scrapped at some point.

I imagine it would be pretty cool to drag it behind a jeep in the snow also, put a grab handle or 2 on it and drag your friends around lol

Way more fun to take an upsidedown, 70's Ford truck hood and put the mattress on IT in good snow. Tie a jerk strap to it in the front/middle, about 100' or more behind the tow vehicle and see how many drunks can stay on the pile of laughing riders at SAFE speeds ofcourse. Best in fields or safer country roads w a sober driver and spotter like waterskiing. Watch out for mailboxes, trees, and deep ditches and get off/ fall off, before you get hurt or die!! Ford Pinto and VW bug hoods work w smaller mattresses. Don't try this at home!!! We did it when we were younger and healed faster!! We had 10 or or more piled on at once. Some standing,
holding on to ropes attached to the front of the hood. PS DRIVERS!!!!!! be sure to turn tow vehicle hard before stopping or get rearended w a sliding 70's truck hood and possible still attached riders!! don't ask how I know. I assume no responsibility for deaths or injuries!!.:shaking:

Here in Raleigh there are several convenience centers that you can drop them off at for free and it will later be taken to the landfill. There might be something of that sort near you.

Bonfire! Thats how us rednecks get rid of them.

Or, just strap it to the roof of your car with 3/32"dia twine and drive. you're bound to loose it somewhere, prob within about 5 miles of the house and/or when you reach 47mph :D

I remember a segment on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe a few years back where a guy worked for a large city and his job was to remove old mattresses people had dropped off around less populated areas. I'm not for sure but I think he said among many "other things", an old mattress could contain up to 10 lbs of dead human skin!

Where-ever you buy your new mattress, have them deliver it. They'll cart off the old, and you don't have to mess with it.

(And think about that next time you have a new mattress delivered...somebodys old bedbug-infested mattress with 10 lbs of old skin in it was leaning against it in the truck on the way to your house.)

I put it in the front yard and someone took it before the end of the day. I just hope they don't have a black light in their room!

If it's not in terrible shape just post an ad in the free section of Craigslist. Somebody will probably want it and they'll do all the hard work of hauling it away for you.

Someone was telling me about this last weekend. He said you can sell it if you have it sanitized first. Supposedly mattress stores have a machine that essentially bakes the mattress to kill off everything. No idea if this guy really knew what he was talking about, so take it for what it's worth.
