I felt this needed to be seen and I know a lot of people venture in here so here goes.
I know when things aren't the freshest we tend to lose a little steam when it comes to action. Because of poor weather and scheduling conflicts the work day at Max Patch was postponed until today (and then that almost didn't happen). If anyone remembers, the vandalism took place back in the winter at the beginning of the year when some thoughtless jackasses torn down the fence and drove up the face of Max Patch and proceeded to cut donuts on the bald.
Fast forward till today... 12 members from Appalachian 4x4 and 10 members of the Carolina Mountain Club joined forces to repair that damage. I was unable to attend and I know that it makes me look like a douchebag for organizing it and then not showing but it is what it is. I don't mind hearing it after today. Anyway, I received an email a short while ago about the efforts.
Mr. McCracken,
It was a great day on the mountain. Wish you could have been there - 39 degrees, sleet and high winds. HA!
But seriously, it was a good day. Your group comported themselves in a courteous and extremely friendly manner; and the Carolina Mountain Club members (most who are between the ages of 65 to 85) were impressed with their willingness to get down and dig in the dirt and work hard; which we did - we hand dug approx. 375 feet of new sidehill trail, dug the holes and planted 16 5' rhododendrons and took the sod from the sidehill trail and replanted it in approx. 150' of ruts from the errant youth 4WDer's episode. All in all a very good day.
I got a number of pictures, even with the dense fog, but it was so cold at the last that I neglected to get the names of all your folks. If you can get that info to me, I would appreciate it greatly, as we make reports of all the work we do on the Appalachian Trail and we include the names of all who worked with us. And I will send you a pic of the group and some other other shots.
Again, thank you for your assistance in this work. I believe the CMC folks have a new appreciation of your crowd, and your willingness to "give back" to the beautiful natural world we enjoy here is WNC.
I think this speaks volumes for our community. You never get a second chance to make a first impression and I believe they hit this one out of the park. There will be a press release about the work from the Ranger and I believe I'll put one together to double those efforts. This is a very big step in the right direction and has made a positive impact to everyone involved. I can't thank the guys/gals from Appalachian 4x4 that showed up enough and if you ride in Hurricane Creek I think you owe them a big pat on the back as well. I'll get those names put up later as soon as I get them.
