What's the rundown? Anybody used or currently using it or a similar service? Work covers my health insurance 100%, but the rest of the family is over $700/month.

I looked into sidecar. It's a fixed indemnity plan....pays a set amount per code. Doesn't matter if you have insurance or not....can be used for medical expenses, income replacement, whatever. You can look up those payout amounts and figure out your real benefits and return before signing up.

I was interested in it because we have the ACA plan, and Lee County is the absolute worst in the state under ACA...it's a BCBS plan, but even our local hospital is out of network. Once we get out of central NC (UNC hospitals spread, basically), our coverage really sucks. Covers emergency only....so a trip to the ER is covered. But when they send you to the ortho that same day to get your broke leg set, it's no longer an "emergency", and the entire bill for that is out of network.

What I found out after a lot of research, is that Sidecar is great for the first year. Then they adjust your rate based on prior years costs. So it was 500 a month, it might go to $1500 for the same coverage the next year.

I still might sign up for it....in the year that we finally do our epic RV trip out west, just for the extra coverage, and no networks. But I'll plan on it being a one-time only thing.

As to the religion based cost sharing plans, I'm not too sure. Looked into them, but there was not a guarantee that they would pay well, or at all.

Hahahaha

Just me on my wife’s county insurance (she is retired but insurance stays the same) is $550/mo…but just price individual plans for a 51 year old man and you realize it’s a bargain.

Threads like this are just another reason I am thankful that I decided to make a career of the military and retire! My entire family, myself two kids and the Mrs are about $400...that's not a month, that's a year! The co-pays have gone up slightly in the last couple years but it's still pretty decent and I thank my lucky stars every day that we have this benefit! Plus it's awful nice to be in your 40s and "retired" don't get me wrong, I am not retired like that, I still work full-time as a maintenance engineer for an exhaust manufacturer

Everything I have read points to a good thing Matt. I believe you are expected to negotiate your price down, then submit the price with a document stating the negotiated price was accepted by the provider. No pre-existing conditions are allowed.

I've also read good things, but I dont believe everything I read on the internet, so I was hoping for some firsthand experience.

There was a big thread on arfcom a while back and I didn’t read one negative review
