I have a son nearly 15.
I am the legal guardian custodian what have you.
His mother only has rights to see him every other weekend.
Neither of us has ever served in the military.
My son, let it be known he has some type of military ID. (He needs a photo ID for a Scouting trip so he blurts out said info.)

To the point: My ex-wifes husband is a vet, he is in no way shape or form legally bound to my son. Hell his own three kid don't live with him. He also draws full disability for bad knees and plays soccer.

Now his affairs I could care less about, but if jointly he and my ex are sponging off benefits related to my son I'm now pissed. I have never pressed for support or asked, and the ex cost me a damn bunch for years as it is.

Does my son have any use, need, or right to any form of military (IE family ID)?????

Since he is on full disability, (Ex wifes husband) he probably has gov't insurance or Champus on the his self and his dependants. All persons covered would need an ID.

I *think* the question is whether this boy actually qualifies as a dependent. By the description above, it's very unlikely.

As a third party looking in on the situation, I would say that the disabled vet is claiming the boy as a dependent. If he in fact has an offical US Military ID card, how else could he get it? It should say "Dependant" on it somewhere.

Thanks for the replies. So I'm thinkin the right direction. Anybody got some concrete yes or no he can legally do that? My son only resides with his mother every other weekend, pays no support, alimony, insurance or otherwise out of her pocket much less their household. I'm all for getting what's rightfully yours but I am fed up with freeloaders and scammers in general. Any advice or people I can contact?

Claiming someone as a "dependent " does not require to much "proof" I would say it will be you job to try to prove he is in fact not his dependent.

Now if I am understanding what is said above, wouldn't this mean your son is covered under his insurance? (Why else would he need or have the ID) if this is the case, would that be a bad thing???

If the disabled vet and @WARRIORWELDING are both claiming the boy on thier taxes, that could be a bad thing.

Indeed. This is the only reason. And the fact that this point they use all of his non household children to draw alot of govt assistance while he works cash construction, and on and on. I believe in rewarding service but given what I know. I doubt the service was much to speak about.

No... he's illegally claiming him.

Before jumping to conclusions, There are legal scenarios where he could get an ID, You can be given an ID, but not enrolled in DEERS (The medical eligibility system). If mom goes on the base/post, and needs to be able to take the boy with her, they might give him a card for that...

Admittedly it's not a likely scenario in this case, but it could be what's going on here....

He is no longer active. I'm headed in the right direction thanks for tha replies guys.

I would ask my son when he has ben asked to show the ID, let his answer guide the next step.

Your son doesn't look 18 and have a fake id does he? Just kidding, sounds like you are on the right track. My first thought was that the disabled vet was illegally claiming him as a dependent. RatLabGuy is on it. Some inquisitive questioning is in order.
