MOAB travel/route recommendations?

Personally, I'd not do the 24 hr straight drive through.
I've done several trips where I was on the go-go-go up to the moment of arrival, including having little sleep. It sucks.
That is a very shitty way to START your awesome vacation trip.
Seriously, you want to show up there nice and relaxed, well rested, and ready for several awesome days. If you do the crunch-drive at the last minute you'll spend the next 36 hrs in recovery mode. I know you aren't a spring chicken any more...

Plus, consider that you really show allow some buffer time just in case of issues on the way. E.g. if you leave 24 hrs before you need to be there, what happens if you have a minor overheating issue on the way? Or blow a 2nd flat and lose several hours getting a tow and change out? You'll end up even more flustered and late.

If you're tight on time, I'd do the crunch-drive on the way home. Then you can be a zombie or an asshole grouchy-puss at work where it doesn't matter o_O:D.

In my opinion, which is worthless, the drive through Texas, new mexico is boring as hell!

x2! West Texas I-10 FUCKIN BLOWS! Longest drive of ab-so-fuckin-lutety NOTHING. Not to mention I-10 through Louisiana will beat the shit out of you unless they've finally repaved it. And When you head out of San Antonio, you better be gassed up and have some reserves! Otherwise hit I-20, at least you have a couple of towns West of Ft Worth before you head out into the tumble weeds.

Where did you get the notion that either of those (I-10 or I-20) *way too far south* routes were an option? :flipoff2:

BTW, have something for you, so maybe we can brew a batch 1Q2017?

I haven't been to Moab yet (planning a trip for fall 2018 or spring 2019 when my youngest child will be 2+) but my wife has family just north of Dallas and we've driven through the night there with a 1 year old and my mother-in-law. We were completely exhausted the first day or day and a half we were there. For the Moab trip, the preliminary plan is to drive through the night to their place on Frisco, then rest a day or two and take 2 days during the day for the rest of the trip. I've seen everything from here to Dallas but want to do the rest in daylight. Coming back we may do the same or go a different route.

Granted I'm near I-20 and the SC/GA line so that route isn't out of the way for me.

I am 50 years young and 3 weeks ago I just went from Fayetteville NC to Sierra Vista AZ in 34 hours straight. 2nd time this year I did it. I hate stopping though. By myself and tried to stop for cat naps a couple times but caffeine would not let me so kept driving. I went 20 to 10 which I know is not your way but I was not bad either trip the day after. I was pulling a 30 foot trailer this last time also.

All goes well I will be just south of you then.

Not much to add except I do everything in my power to stay out of Kansas.

Supposedly there is something worth seeing in that shit state, but every time I've had to cross it I've seen nothing but boredom. I much prefer the length and nothingness of Texas to KS.

I think it was Kansas that we discovered the amazing corn palace a few years ago on a cross country vacation. I agree Kansas sucks.
I thought the corn palace was in Nebraska?

I used to hate Kansas. Now I just enjoy the speed and better mpg's I get through there. I have a friend from Kansas, I've had fun picking his brain about wtf you do for fun in a state like that.
