Personally, I'd not do the 24 hr straight drive through.
I've done several trips where I was on the go-go-go up to the moment of arrival, including having little sleep. It sucks.
That is a very shitty way to START your awesome vacation trip.
Seriously, you want to show up there nice and relaxed, well rested, and ready for several awesome days. If you do the crunch-drive at the last minute you'll spend the next 36 hrs in recovery mode. I know you aren't a spring chicken any more...
Plus, consider that you really show allow some buffer time just in case of issues on the way. E.g. if you leave 24 hrs before you need to be there, what happens if you have a minor overheating issue on the way? Or blow a 2nd flat and lose several hours getting a tow and change out? You'll end up even more flustered and late.
If you're tight on time, I'd do the crunch-drive on the way home. Then you can be a zombie or an asshole grouchy-puss at work where it doesn't matter .
