Can I legally add another axle (with brakes) to my EXISTING (legal registered and tagged) utility trailer for safety concerns (better control in case of a flat, stopping) and not go through the BS at the DMV? The tongue and original axle will still be stamped with VIN.

I know chumming this out on here will get all kinds of conjecture, but hey, Im not adding a doubler to ungear'd 35's

whatcha got?

Replacing the original axle? Shoot, shovel, cover up. How would they ever know? Just do it. HF has letter/number stamp sets. (From an otherwise law-abiding citizen....some things you just have to work around).

NOT that I would ever do this, of course. ;)

My understanding is that a trailer is simply a trailer. Personal trailer tags do not cost any more or less based on weight or number of wheels/axles, so there's no legal violation there.
