Now the XJ is taking forever to start. Basically I have to turn the key and push the gas pedal down a few times to get the engine to start. Usually ends up in a heavy gasoline smell afterwards.

Kinda thinking the fuel pump is on the way out, but Im hoping you guys tell me otherwise.

i think the xjs have a check valve & what it does is let you to keep fuel psi so it will start quicker

^right. instead of pressing the gas, cycle the key on and off for about 3 seconds 4-5 times. if it fires right up the check valve in the pump is faulty and allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank.

of course if you have a fuel press gauge you can check it that way too

Can also be a leaking injector. What year is your Jeep?

You can unbolt the fuel rail from the intake, but leave the injectors and lines on the rail (so you can see the outlet end of the injectors). Turn key on, look for leaks. If you don't see any leaks, most likely the pump is failed.

same problem

i have a similar prolem,if not the same, with my xj. I have a '92 Cherokee Laredo. It cranks after holding the key over for about 5ish seconds.
