looking for a good all-around shotgun..does the mossberg 835 fit the bill? Whats the good and the bad on this gun? Ill be using as target shooter/hunting. Any ideas?

Zack

Only bad thing I have to say is that if you shoot any of the 3.5" turkey loads or buckshot it will kick you in the dirt!!! Believe me I own 2 of them.

I hve several mossbergs and have really never cared for them very much. Id say one of the best pumps for the money would have to be the remington 870 supermag.Ive had mine for several years and put it threw hell, and it still looks and opperates like new.

It would not personally be near the top of my list.

For a pump it is extremely high, depending on "options" you could have a more reliable auto for ~$100 more...

I have owned: Mossburgs, Winchesters, Remingtons, Brownings, Benelli's, and Beretta's

The only I have kept more than 1 season have been Brownings and Benellis..Though my new Beretta is pushing to add its name to that list.

For a smooth dependable pump I would look at a Browning. Though it may just be a matter of preference and also could vary I suppose with your intended usage. I am not a sporting clays shooter, when I fire a gun there is an animal in the sights.

Currently in the safe
BPS 20 upland special, factory 19" barrel(no longer an option)
BPS Stalker 10 Black
Belgium Made Browning 12 gauge
Browning Citori Over/Under (won at a raffle going for sale soon)
Browning A-500-G 12 (my least favorite, but kept for sentimental value)

Benelli SPE 12
Benelli SBE II 12
Benelli Nova 20
Benelli Montefeltro 12

Beretta Xtremma 2...I am quickly falling in love with this gun, but it is in a different price range admittedly.

The point of this list: I have shot a few shotguns, and have clearly developed a particular brand liking, your results may vary. If you can shoot a Nova and a BPS along with the Moss before purchasing...you will probably make your own mind up with 1 or 2 trigger pulls

Gun discussion will be allowed. Still NO Selling of Guns, and Rob will be keeping an eye on talks about modifications.

So please don't bring up illegal modifications to your AK47s or you 3000 round tommy gun magazine, and all that cool stuff...

Everyone clear ???? Carry on :)

I went clay shooting this weekend, i had my single shot savage and a buddy had his mossberg 830...i think thats what it was..i shot pretty well with his moss. like i said ill be using this for dual purposes, clays/hunting. shyhik5, haven't looked into a browning, price does come into play for me so ill look them up. flxrubi ill also look at the remington 870 supermag...whats a good price to pay for both of them? 300-400 bucks?

....thanks for reposting it yager :)

Gotta agree with ya on the Beretta. I own 2, one is the Urika 391 with the wetlands camo, and the other is the Silver Mallard (more for upland birds) I've gotta say that Beretta's shoot better than any other gun that I have ever owned, and I have owned a few.

The Mossberg is a decent gun for the money. I have shot one for many years. I was pleased with the gun for the money, but now I shoot berettas and a Remington SP10 (10 guage). :gitrdun:

Good Luck!

Now WARNING the first person to post about fully auto's uzi or grenade launchers I will find you and let YJJPWrangler87 test fire a few different models

Don't screw this up for the rest of us

the 870 is the best allaround for the money. tried and tested for a hell of along time and there still makeing them enough said lol.

I will not dispute the 870s track record, I can only speak from experience.

I bought one and took it to Argentina 2 years ago on a dove shoot, luckily I was warned to bring a back up as often guns can get damaged during the intense quantity of shooting done (think cases a day if you have never been or researched) In my first 100 rounds with my 870 9 shells failed to eject properly.
I put it away and broke out my SBEII No more problems that weekend...
Had gun checked out when I got back and was told all was working properly, and " It must be inexperience" I promptly handed the gun back and received (most) of my money back.

Granted there are 1000 good ones for every story like mine, but I have had only a bad experience and little dealer support. Guess it helps that the guy I deal with is a gold star whatever dealer in browning and benelli only.... YMMV

Yo,
Have disassembled and honed all moving parts in a Mossfrog pump. Must say the stamped parts had lots of sharp edges and burrs. POS in my book of reasoning. Remington 870 is by far the best bang for the buck. Lots of flavors too. Small price difference between Mossfrog and 870 makes the 870 Remington a nobrainer and they were lots of them in Viet Nam,
field tested and validated to take the abuse.

SO it sounds like you are not up on the gun stuff.
Owning a full auto or any class III is ok in a lot of states just a little more paperwork. And yes you can get grenade launchers to.......all legal....

Maybe a better way that does not sound anti gun would be to say:

Now WARNING the first person to post about anything not legal or that wants to sell guns and causes this post to go away I will find you and deal with you in person..
K?

Legal?
Yes
Practical, not really, unless of course there is a herd og 12 pointers with kevlar vests..
Looked upon nicely by most(most likely including boards mods)?
Nope

Im not arguing what is or should be legal (BTW NRA Lifer and licensed firearms dealer/transfer location, nah Im not "up on gun stuff:rolleyes: )

The problem most people in the shooting sports hobby fail to realize is the bad public image we can display if we are not careful.

Just like Jimbob plow through farmer joe's corn field and callin it wheelin gives us all a bad name, so do Branch dividians and others who feel the need to armor a small platoon.

For both our sakes, lets take this to pm/email if we wanna discuss specifics, but I think it is in the best interest of the board if we mind the post by Yager overall and keep this discussion to the topic at hand.

ill be more than happy to test fire a few models on the yahoos that screw this thread up:bounce: , im suprised that there hasn't been a gun thread here, its everywhere on pirate. but ill take a look at the 870, would really love to have a benelli, but college student+jeep=no money. Also, where would be the best place to purchase "said items" as in a store :)...Dicks/Wally World? Wally World had the 835 on sale for 298. Also would telling someone where to buy constitute a breach in the rules? Can we have a more concrete rule than whats there? or is it all cool, just don't sell them?

Zack

Well, I'm way down on the experience totum pole on this thread, but I do own an 835, one of the originals when they came out. Heavy, very heavy. My dad got a newer one and was much nicer to carry around. I have put everything from, clay, bird, turkey, and buck through it and love it, never had a mis-fire until last weekend, but I think I didn't pull the slide back all the way, in all the excitement, to allow the shell to eject. I ended up slamming it back in the barrel and getting it stuck, missed a second pig because of that.

Anywho, my only reservation is weight, other then that, I've enjoyed my gun. Oh, one bonus that (again, low expereince) I haven't seen on other shotguns is the safety switch on top, I'm left handed and that was a big factor!

MoMo

P.S. Own a Mossberg 30-06 as well.

Legal?
Yes

So if you are in the NRA and a Dealer you should know you are either for gun owners or not.
LIke saying 30 rd mags or all high cap mags are not Practical or fit a use for you so you do not care if they get baned.
Your in or out on gun ownership its not this gun is good and this is bad.

Nope
Im not arguing what is or should be legal (BTW NRA Lifer and licensed firearms dealer/transfer location, nah Im not "up on gun stuff:rolleyes: ) ...
If this is true you should know that you never list guns on the web like you did to help the people that want to steal them from you and you don't talk about shooting people.

The problem most people in the shooting sports hobby fail to realize is the bad public image we can display if we are not careful.
Yep a gun owner or shop saying they are bad and people should not have them then papers or news groups talk that "that type gun is so bad that even the local shop does not want them around".

I will find you and let YJJPWrangler87 test fire a few different models.
Its stuff like what you said that gives gun owners a bad name, talk like that could be taken as a threat to shoot someone.

BTW I have 20 plus years working in a gun shop, one of the biggest in the area and life NRA sorry I just cant see a NRA member saying stuff like, "Practical, not really" or giving ammo to the anti gun people.

I'm done with this part of the post............

All around my personal favortie is my Remington 870 tactical issue. I was skeptical over it at first due to how much I loved my Benelli M90. I shot a Benelli for 3 years before I got my 870. The way mine is outfitted the 870 has some weight to it but its nowhere near close to unbearable. The 870 to me also feels more comfortable in my hands

HI,
Maybe we can take this to a point that it will help you.
I have many years working on and selling guns.
Most all the guns people have talked about are good and will fit for what you want.
First thing you need to ask yourself is what money you want to put in to it and what you will do with it.
From the sounds of it you want a 12 ga and your talking pump and lets stick to the new guns.
I would say that the Remington is the best bang for the buck we sell more of them then any other maybe 100-150 plus a year and have only had a few with people not happy with them and they were the ammo that they picked to shoot.
There is some less money and some more like the Browning BPS and the Benelli but for the money you could get an 870 with the wood or black plastic stock its hard to beat it.
You also need to look at if you want 3" or 3.5" to fill your need.
Most of the factory offer a lifetime warrenty but you need to get it to them and returned. Some shops still work on them.
Just set the price aside and hit some shops in your area to see what fits you and make sure someone that knows what to look for helps you. Find the gun or guns that fits and then look around for deals for those guns. Some rebates are on the 50 to 150 range that you mail in and some rebates are in the store only like a name brand store....
No gun no mater the price or brand, if it does not fit then its no good for you.
Working at the shop I get a lot of offers to shoot on a brand name team and have turned down a $40,000 gun that would be given to shoot because I did not like the way it pointed and went back to Browning and Winchester.
There is a lot more in a gun then the brand and cost.
Please let me know if you need anything else or I can help you find info on something that fits your need.
I will not talk anything about sales or give prices.
I just want to help you find what you want and need and maybe point you in the correct direction.

If you could find a used Mossberg New Haven (predecessor to the 500...I think) buy it! Mine was a christmas present when I was 16...24 years ago. It has put a big pile of meat...big game and small game ... in the freezer and never one minute of trouble.
The problem is...they seem to do so well I've never seen a used one for sale.

I have allway shot a winchester model 1300XTR water fowl ( fancy version of the model 120) It is just a pump and I have never had any issues and have had it for 22 years.

yeah the mossberg i saw at wally world could shoot a 3.5, it came in woodlands camo i think, yeah i know theres more bout a gun than the name/brand and for everyone its gonna be different about what they like to shoot, just wanted to get an opinion on this model gun, i've also just glanced at the 870 and wally world has it for 521, just a lil over my price range tho. Like i said, want a good all around gun, I don't have to have the best one yet, as this one will prolly be used a lot(nicked and scratched etc,) the only places i know that sell guns is Dicks/Wally World and I think Davi's might...i know its a range..ill keep looking, and keep the replys coming...its helping me find what i really want.
and for Mr. Gadget, I know what you mean about giving the "ammo" to the anti-gun nuts, but Im pretty sure ShyHiK5 was joking, and i was too...

You should be able to get a 870 for 250 to 325 or so that price sounds like a 11-87 or a better 870 wingmaster.
Zack there is more shops around here. Try Wendell...
As for camo we sell a lot but the camo changes each year and people always loose money or grow out of love with the looks and sell or trade up.
Better to stick with wood or black plastic camo cost and does nothing really for you hunting.
Jon

I have PM'd Mr.Gadget my thoughts on the political stuff, cause I fear further discussion will help neither of us...

I do agree with this latest advice and was partly why I made the previous comment, get a few of your choices in your hand.

$521 seems a bit pricey for an 870 plain jane model. I've got right at $850/900 in mine but that was w/ all the upgrades including the price of the gun

yeah when i quoted that it wasn't for an 870 supermag it was for the wingmaster, wally world at it right under 300, less than the 835, so ill prolly be taking a further look at the 870. Wish there was a gun shop that would let you "test" a gun to see if you really like it.
