Check your local bike shops for close outs and demo bikes now that the 2014s are coming in.
That should get you better components for your target range.
Tarheeltrailblazers is a good source for used.

i got my specialized used off craigslist a few years ago for like $400, it was almost brand new at the time

Your LBS will have some clearance stuff now that the '14s are being released but I would wait until after Interbike at the end of September when all the '14 hype really gets going. Let someone else take the hit on how much one costs new. Just like a damn car. Once the new hot poo comes out value drops on bikes.

What are you looking for 26, 650B or 29er?

Stretch, I had a Marlin 29er but now that I have a little one I want to be able to do more road riding (along with offroad) so I can pull him in his cart. I am looking for something with gear options at this point.

I've rode it to work (road) a half dozen times and average 3min slower than my road bike over a 6.5 mile ride. Lockout really helps, not as fast as my road bike but still rides great. I did have to file a warranty claim for the "lockout" cap this weekend as mine just disappeared. Not sure what happen to it. Bike weights 31 lbs if that matters.
 
I just bought a GT 3.0 hardtail 29er this past weekend for just under 500. Good riding bike
