Mounting rubber bed mat to tailgate

I picked up a used rubber bed mat and need to mount the tailgate protector. The truck has some beauty marks but I'm still being kinda sissy about drilling 8 holes in the tailgate to mount it. Anyone drilled the holes and used self tappers? Which self tappers do I use? I've see these glue on plastic snaps that are used for plastic bedliners. Would they work? Where do you get those?

I'd either rivet it or use self tapping screws. No need to drill holes for those first...that's why they're called self tapping  :D

Right, technically the ones that drill are self drilling screws but self tappers is synonymous with both self drillers/tappers. If you do a google search for self tapping screws you will get a mix of self drilling and self tapping. A true self tapper requires and undersized whole to be drilled. I'm looking at drilling the undersized hole precisely where I want it and using a self tapper instead of a self driller.

Well, whichever you use, I'd probably look for the largest diameter heads I could find that were fairly smooth across the top so they don't snag stuff that you'll inevitably slide across the tailgate....like the ass of your pants for example!
