Mounting H1s anytime soon? Read First.

I finally got those things to work right. I ordered 8 of the BUNA style o-rings from McMaster-Carr (part# 9452K452 BUNA-N O-RING, $7.04/pack of two) and after trashing 4/4 when mounting, I decided to experiment just a little bit. My first mounting attemp used vaseline on the o-ring, putting it on the wheel where it seats at, and putting the outer ring on. Didn't work that great. What I have found that works best is to take general trim adhesive and spray the outer ring (one that the studs go through) and stick the o-ring in the outer ring, so that it has nowhere to go but where it should go. Take the tire soap and coat the sidewall where the wheel seats, the inner wheel where the outer ring seats, and lubricate the o-ring also with the tire soap. After doing this with all 4 tire/wheel set-ups, all of them have worked without fail and I haven't had any leakage problems. The general trim adhesive will not have detrimental affects on the BUNA o-ring, just for the weary ones. As far as the insert, I used the Stazworks HDPE insert and it went pretty easily. I only weigh about 155 lbs, so I know a lot of you guys would have an easier time than I did. Place the insert on the ground perpendicular to the tire, but the tire over the insert, and step on the tire (both feet on the tire.... be careful, maybe use a wall to steady yourself) until the insert slides in perpendicular to the tire. At this point, stand the tire against a wall and step on the protruding insert until it turns and slides down inside the tire. I used 39.5x13.5 IROKS so you may have even better luck using a slightly wider tire. Good luck.

why???

I dont get why folks booger the orings, I cant imagine how you could do it. Am I missing something? When I did mine, they just kinda fell together like it was no issue. Is this something that is related to straying from the mag run flats? Not bashing, just real curious.
BTW- have fun mounting those suckers if you weigh <200#!

Yeah, I was wondering the same about the orings. I cleaned mine and then put a thin layer of grease on them, then pressed them down into the recess. I feel like I could have taken them on and off 20 times with no problems.

The aftermarket o-rings are just a little bit bigger, causing them to be able to get pinched if there is the slightest variance among all the bolts that cinch the halves together.

I think it definitly comes from buying generic o-rings. I bought H1 o-rings online and they were the same size as the ones that came with my wheels. I did mess one up on installation, but it was my fault not a mounting problem. Just cover with grease and mount. The grease doesn't help the seal much but it helps keep the ring from pinching and keeps them reusable. I would think that glueing them down you won't be able to break it apart and put it back together.

I've done lots of these in the last couple years, and I only put a little grease on the oring, and on the beads of the tire. Not to 'seal' it so much as it helps everything slide together. Run the nuts down with an impact, and torque to final spec. I think i had 1 leak, and it was due to a valve stem getting fubared
