Movie Rental Rant

Red Box renter only here!

Someone actually watches the bonus features? The 2 that I've watched were boring and out of sync with the movie. I don't really care to watch an interview of someone talking about themselves either, so I could care less about that too. I thought everyone bypassed this crap...

My thoughts exactly.

I actually watch the previews. Sometimes I happen across one I haven't seen or heard of. As for the bonus features..mEh, not so much. IMO, the publishing/production companies could fire the people who make the bonus features and give me a cheaper DVD/Blu-ray.

Along those lines, does ANYONE use any of those "new" features with Blu-Ray movies, like the BD Live, or the maps that move along with the movies, or the live commentary, or ANY of that crap?

I use the BD Live and Pocket Blu stuff sometimes. I can control the content with my iPhone and can look at extras on my iphone while the movie is playing. That's the extent of it for me.

The only problem with on-demand is your monthly subscription just to have the ability to watch on-demand. Your cable/satellite provider is screwing you! :D What are you paying, $50 a month minimum for a bunch of channels that you don't use? Then you have to pay more for the actual stuff you want to watch?

We watch MOST of those channals.

Gram watches the old peoples channals, and the cartoon channal.

jon watches the sports and speed channals, along with the descovery.

I am an on demand freak... I only watch shows on demand... prime time, gene simmons, bbc top gear, etc. and most of the time I hit up the animal planet.. That covers most of the random channals.

And on top of that they try to force you to watch movie/game previews. The only way to skip them is to fast forward through them, you can't "skip chapters" or hit "menu".

This annoys me too. There is probably a technical reason for it, but I really don't understand why my DVD player won't grant me control to go to the title menu during the previews. Sounds like the tail wagging the dog so to speak. A quick Google search comes up with some ways around it, but they vary by player.

I also don't understand why AT&T U-Verse charges $5-$6 for just about all new release streaming rentals. From a consumer perspective it sort of makes sense...You pay a couple bucks extra for the convenience of not having to go out to pick up the DVD. From a business perspective it fails IMO. AT&T does not have to pay for a brick & mortar location or even a rental box like Redbox. They don't have employees manning the store or rotating the discs in the box. They don't have to pay for a physical disc or deal with damaged discs. If they really want a piece of the action they should come in the same price or cheaper than their competition. They have a competitive advantage with their easy streaming, but I think they could capitalize on it and steal a much bigger market share if they just matched pricing with their competition. Steal market share first...Then bump up the price and raise your profit margins once you have your clients hooked and your competitors crippled.
