Hi folks!
When we got set up to receive cable internet, I asked the installer to put the live cable in our basement because that was closest to my home office (I telecommute, so having fast internet at my computer is part of my business). But its location leaves the living room upstair in sort of a dark spot, signalwise. I have thought about moving the cable modem to one of the empty wall jacks in a room directly above my office.
Now here's my problem:
I have identified which line in my cable box (outside) leads to the desired room. I connected that cable to the incoming signal line that comes from the street. But I cannot get the modem to connect to the internet when I plug it into the new wall jack. It gets about halfway through the boot-up process and then stalls out. The people from Charter tell me that I need to have a guy come out and set it up. It's not expensive, but i really don't want to have to reschedule an entire day (say it with me: "between the hours of 8 am and 2 pm") if this is something I can fix myself.
My questions:
I am wondering if coax cable requires some special connectors to run data? Right now, my wall jack uses those cheesey bottom-shelf-grade plates that look like this. Would better hardware fix my problem? Or is there something else that I'm missing? Or do i just need to punt a call in the pros?
