Moving a shop...

Time to be thinking about an eventual move to a new (home) shop. Current shop is 24x24, and is chock-full. Some big tools (drill press, welders, etc), welding table, overbuilt workbench. Some big tool rollaways, one stacked, one about 72" tall. Big safe (500+ lb). And a ton of parts and stuff, inside and out.

Whats the best way to think about moving this stuff? Hire it out? One trip at a time with the pickup and trailer, or try and do it all with a rental truck (liftgate??)? Hire a couple of helpers, or rent a forklift?

Who has had experience moving an entire workshop? Any advice to share? Figure I need to be working as I go along helping to make things more "move-able" so it's not all done at crunch time.

I would say offer time and help in the new shop to 2 or 3 guys who are half local and have a trailer or trailers.I am sure most of the guys on here would love to have time in a real Shop.

last year i moved my shop. i moved from a 4000 sq ft shop to a10,000 sq ft shop. i used trailers but i own a forklift so it wasn't the worst thing i had ever done.

my advice is to go to harbor frieght and buy four, little moving dollies and set everything on them, roll them on the trailer then move them off.

Forklifts are good. Heavy crates, pallets for loose stuff. If every thing is pallettized it can all be pick up & go. Streach wrap is your friend there. Also works good for securing drawers on tool boxes. Beg, borrow, trailers, flat bed trucks. Make sure any one who helps is safety minded & can work as a team.

I moved about two years ago and stuff that I hadnt needed or had a call for 6-12 months got scrapped.I had about 6-8 trucks that had to go also so stuff that could be left outside went in the bed and stuff that couldnt was boxed up and put inside the cab (if it would fit).I also called in some favors from people that owed me.I used a cherry picker for the heavier stuff and the dollys from HF would be a good ideal also.I'm building a new shop right now and it will be the last time I move. The next time it'll all go to the crusher.

I have a suburban and 20 ft steel deck trailer I might be able to offer to help out depending on the day/time? I am in fayetteville so Sanford is roughly a 30-45 minute drive. I also have a set (4 ea) of car dollies that has helped moving some heavy stuff around. I am not able to carry/lift anything heavy anymore (several back surgeries) but willing to help out when/if needed.

BTW how far do you plan on moving the stuff from its current location? I migt be able to swing by one or two evenings in the car to help get things ready to move if needed.

No, this is nothing immediate, just looking out ahead a couple of years. Will be a local move. Just trying to plan ahead, and think about how things will be moved, so I can kind of organize and get things in some order for moving, rather than coming down to move time and having to figure it all out.

However and whenever it happens, it will involve a "cleansing". Scrap, parts, junk will be diverted to the scrapper.
