My father in law has given me his 96 Cherokee, only problem is he lives 7 hrs away. Is it legal to drive it back home with no license plate? I heard somewhere it was legal as long as I had the title and bill of sale on hand.

Is it still registered in his name? Drive it back on his plate.
If this is all in NC, you should be able to do all he paperwork at the DMV tag office near him, to get it all registered in your name, and your new tag.

Just call your insurance company and add it on, then drive home with the proof of insurance and the title/BOS. You'll be fine.

I got pulled over a few months back in a truck I had done this with. Apparently someone had stolen a similar truck and they wanted to check and be sure. They didn't hassle me at all, just checked my papers and sent me on my way.

Or you could take the title, proof of insurance, and BOS to the DMV and get a temporary tag to move it and not have to worry about anything.

He's in WV and he already transferred the plate to another vehicle. It's such a pain to work out the logistics but I can't say no to a free vehicle.

If he mails you the title, you can go to the tag office and get a plate right then and they mail off the title transfer paperwork. Then you have a legit tag. Since its an out of state vehicle, no inspection is required (though they say it is, I've bought about 5 vehicles from out of state in the past 3 years, and none have required inspection to get a NC tag).

Put ins on it and have him sign the title and rock on, have done this multiple times on out of state title that do not require a notary. As a side note you can also run redlights that are camera protected on your way home!!!

X 2 WITH THIS STATEMENT...I DO IT ALL THE TIME HERE AT THE SHOP...NO PROBLEMS OR HASSLES

I am in WNC & I bought a little gas saver that the title work was all screwed up. I got a bill of sale, proof of insurance, & a copy of where it passed inspection as well as a lost title form I am working on & I got stopped twice with no tag & they let me go & just said to get it fixed as soon as I can.
