In just two weeks from this moment, i will be newly married, and in just three weeks from now i will be hauling some clothes and other assorted junk to my new semi permanent residence in the sprawling metropolis of Sylva, NC. I do not know hardly anyone up there, nor do i have a job lined up yet. To make it all a cocktail of stress, the new living space will have no space for my tools, spare parts, or even allow me to change my own oil. So here is the help that i need, I am looking for any memebers in the Sylva area that could maybe help a fellow member out with some work space from time to time, maybe some job oppurtunity help, the general moving to a new area kinda help. Pm me or post int he thread if you can give me a heads up on a job or if youd mind meeting up sometime to show me your favorite trail or if you have some spare shop space that could be borrowed from time to time for a small fee.

Wish I could help, hang in there and congrats on the wedding!

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. Kinda sucks that I have to leave my wheeling rig at my folks house before i get to take it on its maiden voyage, but my own maiden comes first i suppose!

Hey man theres a group of us called appalachain 4x4 we are out of Canton we would be willing to help out as much as possible

I will check in with you smitty after i get settled.

I know im gonna get the wheeling bug everyday, the driveway to the house we will be living at is a half mile long, gravel, and is as steep as some trails at URE.

Yeah man give me a holler when you get up here.

once you get to Sylva look around for a place called Jackson Papers. It's a recycle paper mill in Sylva. That's really the first place that came to mind when thinking about an industry that might be hiring. Look them up and fill out an application. Otherwise you might try to get on at the local university in Cullowhee. About 15 mins from Sylva.

Nick is right jackson paper has the highest paying jobs in that area.

Already checked WCU, nothing three that im qualified to apply for. The wife to be works there and her boss is keeping her eye out for news of hiring there. Hadnt thought about the paper mill yet, im gonna have to check into that.

I wouldn't waste my time at Jackson Paper. I work there and the word around the mill is that there gonna possibly lay some people off starting in November. But there is a fabric plant opening up down behind mc donalds in the not so distant future.

What kind of previous work experience do you have?

I wouldn't put much hope in getting anything at WCU. In general, the state isn't hiring unless its to fill some specific skill. Lots of frozen positions where people have quit and have not been replaced.

My wife is a nursing manager in a state owned medical facility. She can hire as needed to replace people who quit or retire because nursing care is the core function of the place. But, in the ancilliary departments its not that way at all. There's one man there who now supervises 4 different departments. 2 other supervisors retired and a third one quit for another job, so they've given him the responsibility of all 3 additional departments on top of the one he was already running. I dropped my wife off there at 6:30 one morning last winter when the roads were icy, and he was there working with some of the guys he supervises, cleaning the sidewalks and spreading salt, because every department he supervises is also short handed due to frozen positions that can't be filled according to mandates from Raleigh. It will take several years of a strong economy before this situation changes enough for much hiring to happen.

Don't mean to rain on your parade, but there's no need to waste time hoping something will open up when there's a near zero chance of it actually happening.

Just happened to think of something..... Check out Harrah's Casino at Cherokee. Doesn't take but 20 minutes or so to get there from Sylva. They have hundreds of employees in lots of various types of jobs. From what I understand, the pay and benefits are decent. There's quite a bit of turnover in some jobs there, so they have openings pretty regularly. Might be able to get on doing something you may not be wild about, but once you're in you'd have knowledge of other jobs there as they come open and before they're advertised to the public. Just don't go there if you have a gambling problem :D
