mower tech?

I have two mowers about 10 years old with about 20hp briggs motors. They both sputter and backfire when not under a load. Under load they are fine. I changed plugs in one and inspected the other and it didn't help. The air cleaners are fine on both. Any other ideas?

Probably carb problems & sometimes a weak governor spring can do that too.

Run some techron injector cleaner through them.. might save you having to pull & clean carbs.

Sounds like a typical twin-cylinder Briggs with clogged air circuits. Also, make sure you run ONLY Champion RC12YC plugs in them.
