i am considering buying a 4.o 98 tj with 33 i whatened to know if any one could tell me from past experience what kind of mpg it would get with no performance mods and how much it would get with performance mods

14-16 MPG without regearing is what I averaged on 33's. You are better off inventing a time machine than trying to figure out how to get decent gas mileage out of a TJ.

However, my larger, heavier ZJ with a 4.0 got 20 highway, and about 15 city. Nomatter what engine you put in a TJ, driving a brick down the highway isn't gonna get good MPG

Cold air intake or computer adjustment will not make a noticable difference.

4.0
33's
4.11's
Manual Trans.

12.5 - 14 mpg.

X2 on what Joel said about regearing and the time machine.

I have an 04 TJ 5spd on 33's w/4.11's and get 16-17 reliably when mostly on the highway, when I'm mostly around town it's usually only 15 or so.

Are you doing your math correctly? If you regeared and didn't correct your speedo you may be off a bit.

I get roughly 250 miles per 15 gallons = 16.66 mpg. My speedo always reads about 10 mph high because I never recalibrated my speedo. Therefore the ODO records more miles than actually traveled. I'm really only getting roughly 200 miles per 15 gallons, giving 13 mpg.

if its got 3.73s which was lowest stock gear in 98 for a 4.0 then yes I think 15-16 is possible but it will be the high end

4.56's, 37's, 16-18. Speedo off by 2 mph according to GPS, so that's close enough for me.
If anyone buying a Jeep is concerned about gas mileage, they'd be better of not buying a Jeep.

its not that im specifically looking for better gas mileage i get 13 with stock 93 4runner and every time i wheel i break something all my freinds have jeeps and the other me and my buddy were goin down the road and he rearend someone and ended up going off a 4ft bank and leaveing with only body damage my 4runner would have hobble on to the wrecker with shoccks shot threw the hood

Yeah I drove my jeep off a 3 1/2 drop off that I didnt see coming and didnt hurt a thing (accept my chances of getting with the girl I scared shitless).

On a side note, my jeep was an 05 4.0 with the auto, it had 36s and 4.56 gears.... I got 10mpg..... but I think there was definitely something wrong my jeep.

'00 TJ, 4.6 Stroker, NV3550 5spd, 4.56 gears, 35"ATs, 14-14.5 mpg (I have gotten just over 15mpg twice). Before the stroker, I was getting 10-12, occasionally 13.

When it was stock on 225's and 3.07 gears I got in the 18-20 range. One time, driving to Ocean Isle from Charlotte, I got 23mpg.
