I know this isnt a 4x4 question but I figured someone may know a little about this.

Ive met a guy who has a 1966 mustang that his been sitting in his garage for 16 years, he bought the car new in 66 for his wife to drive. Ive never really thought about owning one but figured this may have some real value, hes sent me pictures and with the exception of a few minor rust spots the car is in great shape. My question is what would an all original 66 mustang with only 2 owners (the seller and me) go for? Im planning on going to look at it in the future are there anythings I should look out for that may set this one apart from a base model 66?

Thanks for any help
Ben

Need more information...
Fastback? Coupe? Convertible?
289?
Lots of determining factors. Get as much information as possible, and post some pictures.

Need at the very least which body stlye and the specifice drivetrain info. A K code 289 fasback with disc brakes, a/c, and a 4 speed is easily worth triple what a 200ci six cyl three speed manual drum brake coupe would go for. Also, pony or std. interior makes a difference, GT or non-GT, all the details possible and pics of the rust would make it easy to establish a reasonable value.

Thanks

Thanks so much, got a little more info today,

Thanks so much for the help

From what I can see it looks like a typical 221hp car with the typical first gen rust. If the lower corners are rotten you can almost bet on doing trunk dropoffs, floors, cowl vent panels, and possibly doors. From the little I can see of it the body looks pretty straight, and the interior looks like alot of it can be reused. The A code engine is not really special, the K code is the 271hp (rated) engine, but the a code is a flat top piston 10:1 engine with tons of potential. Still not tons of detail on the car, but given that it likely needs at least floors and definately needs lower quarters, and a basic resto. And the fact that its a relatively basic coupe (not an a/c car or a k code, etc.) I'd say depending upon closer inspection for rust and running condition it's worth between $2000-$5000

Thanks

Great thanks so much for all the help, the guy is asking 4k for it so I may think about it a little longer.

Thanks so much
Ben

If it runs decently, and is functional enough to drive with only minor work it's worth it. Just make sure it's not a total cancer bucket.

Places to check very well for rust on these cars before buying: Trunk floor and drop offs, lower quarters, lower doors, wheel arches, lower fenders, floor pan, cowl vent, and the right front frame rail/suspension brackets (battery leaks are bad) If the rust is minimal and only inthe lower quarters or front floor pans and lower quarters it won't be horrible to fix if you can weld. If the frame rail is eaten up there are better canidates unless you plan to tube frame the car. The cowl is easiest to check by pulling back the passenger side carpet and spraying water into that side of the cowl vent toward the pass. side of the car. If it runs into the floor the cowl cap needs all eleventy-billion spot welds drilled out and the lower panel replaced or repaired. Lots of headache, but worth it if the rest of the car is good and solid. If you have any other questions I've built a few of these cars and currently have one under construction with a three link rear, coilover front and a 5spd behind the mildly built original 289. I know my way around them a little (or I'm a glutten for punishment...whichever)

Great advice there...the only thing I add is to also check the bottom of the shock towers, and the torque box area of the floor.
If those two are rusted then you have the biggest rust problems found IMHO...those were two MAJOR PITAs for me. there just isnt an easy fix there.

4k is on the absolute high end of where Id go on it, unless it has sentimenttal value.

(Coming from the guy with somewhere around $25k in a car that was origionally a drum/drum manual/manual 200 3spd prarie bronze with saddle brown int car)
