This is my first attempt to build a motor. I pulled it this weekend. I hope to get it done in the next 2 months. At least thats waht the wife wants.

I thought I would post to show what I did while everyone was out playing.
What I started with.

The bench i built for my parts. I put it on castors to move around if need be.

The old home for the 302.

Hopefully I can get this back together somewhat quickly. I have no idea what I am doing but I am learning as I go. I guess the real test is when it is done and running. If anyone has some 302 parts laying around I could use them, as long as they are still pretty good. This thing was missing a freeze plug and the motor mounts were shot. Doesn't appear to be to badly damaged from what I can see. I thought real hard about putting in the Xj but changed my mid. If this goes well I am going to attempt to stroke the 4.0 in the XJ. Any tips let me know

are you doing a stock rebuild or hop up and are you putting it back into the car
if you have any questions shoot me a pm I have built alot of SBF motors
good luck:beer:

Well the plan at this point is to check the crank for tolences. I want to just replace the parts with stock spec components. I only see one cylinder that has a very small scratch that should hoan out. At least that is what I am hoping for. I will replace the bearings, rings, valve stem seals, and hydraulic roller lifters, with new stock spec ones. Unless I have to take the block out to get it bored out and if that is the case it will gate bored out to .30 and the crank will get polished or turned which ever it needs.

All this is new to me so If you have some tips please share. I have never pulled a motor before much less tear one apart. I have learned a lot already. First being to pressure wash it before you take it apart. I got overly excited to tear it apart.
I am trying to get it done as quick and as cheaply as possible. This will be my daigters first car so I know it will get wrecked and neglected. Although she does really like cars so she might take good care of it.

Those pics weren't as good as I had hoped for. I couldn't get the wifes camera to stop glaring. I finally built a bench to work on. My wife told me it was about time, go figure.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice.

when you reasemble use a double roller timing set(the cheap one IMO is just as good as the expensive one) also dont use the stock oil pump shaft, for some reason they will twist and break
you can get a good one for around $16-$18. and for sure take it and have cam bearings put in, this is a must(makes oil pressure) and it isnt a beginers job. A machine shop can press the old ones out and the new ones in fairly cheap

and again GOOD LUCK:beer:

Gt40 heads, whatever generic letter cam you want, higher comp pistons (hypers are fine), and clean your camera lens. It'll still be a weak bitch, but it's a 302 you can't expect too much and it'll be far better than it was.
Good luck, there are a crazy amount of sbf rebuild books out there so go buy one or two first and take what you read at corral with a grain of salt.

I would love to make it a power house but it will be for a 16 year old girls bday present so I want it mild. I would like to put a 4 banger in it for her. I am going to get another 302 for now and build the other one for future use. Maybe once she learns to drive it well enough and can handle it on the straight track I will put something built in it for her. I found one for $350.00 that runs good and doesn't smoke.
