I spoke with a guy at work about huge machine last week. How it would be a trip to take 1"-1.5" depth of cut on a lathe. That's a scary chip for sure!

I guess the operator wasn't worried about a little chip getting into his eye.
 
Makes me think of GE's old large steam turbine plant in Schenectady NY. Very cool, old ginormous facility.

Buddy of mine spent a couple of weeks in Charlotte babysitting a turbine shaft they shipped in from his CA power plant. I would have figured that there would have been a shop closer than 3k miles away to do that sort of work.

I'm sure there's one closer, but most plants want the original manufacturer to do service and repairs since we have all the engineering information and manufacturing tolerances (and probably documentation of what all the dimensions were when it was originally delivered).
