Given the nature of what the system is for, I'd say they should keep the cross reference ability indefinitely.

The value of it is certainly greater than the cost, but those making the decisions are incapable of understanding that.

This is correct. If they understood it, they likely wouldnt have changed the old PNs to begin with.

Which I what I suspect ackchually happened. They probably just discontinued that particular item, not redid all of their part numbers.
