Can anyone tell me how to get to NC 105? I’ll be coming from the Charlotte area, headed towards Asheville area, and thought I’d stop by and check it out, but having trouble finding out how to get to the actual trail.

Like @ncpartsguy said, map to Wisemans View, and make sure to stop there and take a peek.
Wiseman's View Scenic Overlook

You can come in from the north or south. Road conditions can be fairly rough for anything lower than a Subaru.

To make it worth your while, I'd head north up 105 to Wisemans, then head north and take the parkway over to Curtis creek road and come out in Old Fort.

Or even just take the parkway all the way to Asheville.

Take your camping gear. you will be mad if you don't

So an Outback with 9.5" clearance is fine (serious question)?

Yes. I've driven a Toyota sienna minivan up 105, and down one of the side road/trails.

Yes. I could drive a stock civic on bald tires down it without issue, but the tards on the Gorge Facebook group are constantly bitching about how bad the road is, so I figured since I don't know the OP I'd at least mention it.

Does anyone remember old NC 105 when was a 2 lane track with the old rope swing with wooden seat along the side of the road?

Was a pretty good ride today, Tank and I had a good time. I think the interstate was harder on the old truck than the trail! Did get to lock the hubs though. Seen a few people camping and a few on the trail.

So for coming from Lowgap area, go to Boone and take 105 south to reach old 105? Looks like a cool trip for this spring.

From where you're at, I'd take the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way and get off at 221. Route to Wiseman's View and it will take you right to Old 105.

Sounds like a beautiful trip. We cruise south on the parkway pretty regular but not usually that far.

Another good option would be to take the parkway to Blowing Rock for lunch, and then take NC221 from Blowing Rock over to Linville. The parkway is very flowing and open feeling, whereas 221 is tighter, twistier, and feels a little more "in" the mountains instead of "on" the mountains.

come up from lake James, camp 1st night on 105 hike pinnacle trail it may be .5 miles
finish 105 see the falls, Wiseman's view and head to old house gap to 181 and camp second night dispersed on table rock rd or others close by find your own, PLENTY on the other side of gorge
Table rock and hawksbill hike and travel home the next day.

I will gladly guide anyone on this for $500 and you cover my beer tab and I will provide an Overlander dinner both nights. Beenie weenies or raman with spam your choice!!!

Gonna go down and drive this with the wife soon. Has anyone driven FR982 (Mortimer-Piedmont Road) which is close by?
