The wife is wanting to take a break from our normal beach vacation.

Neither of us have ever seen the outer banks, or anything north of Wilmington to be honest.

We are looking for ideas, whether its a place to stay, or several and we string together a day or two in several destinations.

My son wants Diggers Dungeon incorporated and while we have been before, it is probably on the list again....

So thoughts?
What are the cant misses?
Interested in beaches where the kids can play. Must see experiences, great restaraunts (especially out of the way, non chain driven gems), good deals etc.

So what ya got?

Ocracoke is supposed to be something every North Carolinian needs to see at least once in their Life. Ive never been myself (we went during the off season, couldnt fit our schedule to the ferry's)

Ive been to Indian Beach. Its just north of Wilmington, southeast of New Bern. Very nice, quiet town actually. A friend had one of those dressed up vacation trailers, we were right on the beach. Not super touristy, but not so out of the way that theres no restaurants or stuff to do.

You could go to Rodanthe. See if Richard Gere is out there filming a sequel to another stupid Nick Sparks book

If you make it as far north as KH / Southern Shores, check this place out: http://www.meridian42.com/ We had our wedding reception there ~6 yrs ago. Haven't been back in several years, though.

The top side of the outter banks is a 4x4 community. No paved roads, just beach and dune driving to get to the rental houses, etc.

gotta see the Avon fishing pier. If it is still standing. I haven't been in several years, but I almost got sea-sick looking at the damn thing.

beaufort is cool, its near shackleford banks which is the home to the wild horses that swam over from a sinking spanish ship. cool little shops and resturaunts there too, clawsons is a really good eatery.

Hilton Head Island is my favorite beach.

I prefer Hatteras in the fall after all the plovers chicks have died and we get our PUBLIC beaches back from the damn bird lovers.

I always stay in the 4x4 area. Its just alot calmer and nothing more family oriented imo than having that much space to yourselves. Corolla is right up the beach and has all the touristy stuff you could want. Everything up there is rental houses not much for hotels.

for some awesome deals at the moment

Emerald Isle is nice, a lot of people though and not on the Outer Banks. Ocracoke is awesome, we got a beach house and are staying from the July 4th - 11th. I also have an uncle that lives in Manteo and Wanchese is right down the road from them and he said there are some good places to eat there.
